Sewing Machine Troubleshooting - Sewing Machine Repair
Sewing machine is a heavy duty appliance which does not break down very easily and usually does not give a lot of problems. But if the sewing machine does not work properly, it is depressing for all those who love sewing. No worries for the sewing enthusiasts, here in this article we will deal with sewing machine troubleshooting, which will hopefully be of some help.
To begin with, we need to know what all are the important sewing machine parts are. Bobbin, bobbin wonder, drive belt, foot pedal, motor or the lever, bobbin case, slide plate, throat plate and so on, are the main ones.
Now lets take a look at how to repair faulty or worn out sewing machine belts. For that, you will need tweezers, a round toothpick and a small flathead screwdriver.
Step No.1
Start off with removing the top, bottom and handwheel covers, using the screw drivers. Check out the condition of the sewing machine belt. If it has slackened, loosen the screws holding the motor in place. Follow that up with shifting the motor away from the handwheel, which will increase the belt's tension. In case the belt has cracked or it has broken, you would perhaps need to call your sewing machine belt supplier. By loosening the motor mounting screws and moving the motor towards the handwheel, slip the belt over the parts and install the belt. Check the tension of the belt, if it is loose, then increase the tension.
Step No.2
If there is no apparent glitch in the machine and it is still giving some problems, then you can try oiling and cleaning the antique piece (if at all!) No offense meant! Because you hardly find a brand new sewing machine. For most parts, it is a thing which is mostly passed on from generation to generation, a familiar concept especially in India. Nevertheless, for cleaning and oiling, you have to remove the top, bottom and handwheel covers. Now, remove the plate covering the thread bobbin. Use a screwdriver, in case it is screwed in place. A thorough cleanup is what is needed next. With the help of tweezers, pluck the waste shreds of thread and remove any stubborn lint that you may find. Clean up the crevices with a vacuum cleaner. All the moving parts and gears should be lubricated with lithium grease and sewing machine oil should be used for other parts. The teeth on the gears are important, so use a toothpick to loosen the grime and again, use a vacuum cleaner to remove it totally.
So here was how to repair your domestic sewing machine. Let's take a brief look at industrial sewing machine trouble shooting. Basically industrial sewing are sewing machines used for commercial purposes and are more powerful and heavy duty than the domestic ones, because of large scale production of garments or the likes.
A few troubleshooting problems, which can occur in industrial sewing machines, are:
Sewing Machine Does Not Run
In this case, the user seems to have pressed the wrong lever, resulting in it hitting the needle. In this case, the presser foot needs to be replaced. Also, remove the needle and install a new one.
Breaking of the Bobbin Thread
The cause of this problem could be that the bobbin has not been properly inserted in the bobbin case, or it has not been correctly threaded. So ensure that you have inserted the bobbin thread correctly in the bobbin case. You can also clean up the bobbin case and shuttle.
Improper Stitches
For solving this problem, make sure that the thread is correctly pulled in the thread censor guide. Check the bobbin case, if it is correctly threaded. If not, then, thread it correctly.
Material Cannot Be Fed in the Machine
Well, raise the feed dogs in this case and select the stitch pattern and length. If that does not work, hold the threads back, under a pressure foot, prior to stitching.
These were the most common industrial sewing machine troubleshooting issues. However, the above problems can occur in domestic sewing machines too, and not just the industrial ones. So I hope now, that you won't have any problems with your sewing machines! Happy sewing to the sewing enthusiasts!
