What is Sesame Oil?
As mentioned, sesame oil is extracted from sesame seeds. There are two types of sesame oil. One is the light-colored version (cold pressed sesame oil) that is extracted from raw seeds and the other is the dark-colored variety derived from roasted sesame seeds. The seeds are pressed twice, so as to extract maximum amount of oil and then, the residue is used as cattle fodder. While the light-colored oil is usually used in cooking, dark-colored version is not preferred and is mainly used as a condiment.
Sesame oil has a long shelf life, as it is not found to turn rancid as quickly, as some other types of oils. Sesame seeds are also used in baking, as an additive in bread dough. This oil is also used in some types of alternative medicine, mainly as a massage oil, as it is said to be good for the skin and hair. It is also said that this oil is effective in reducing stress.
Sesame Oil Health Benefits
Sesame oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and other phytonutrients. A cup of sesame oil amounts to 2000 calories and contains around 220 grams of total fats and zero cholesterol. It has 3.1 mg vitamin E and 29.5 mcg of Vitamin K. Some other vitamins and minerals are also found in small amounts. Even though, health benefits of sesame oil is not a well-studied subject, it is claimed to be having certain therapeutic effects. This oil is said to be beneficial for lowering high blood pressure. Even high levels of blood sugar is said to be controlled with this oil. Sesame oil is also highly beneficial for the skin and is said to possess both moisturizing and detoxifying effects. As this oil is rich in antioxidants, it is also said to have anti aging properties and is used for keeping the skin free of wrinkles and spots.
Sesame oil is used for treating certain skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, etc. It is also believed to be beneficial for women, who are going through menopause. This oil is also claimed to be effective in lowering cholesterol levels. Use of this oil is said to be good for preventing oral problems, like gingivitis. So, it is widely used for oil pulling, which is an ancient Indian practice of swishing oil in the mouth. It is also used as a remedy for a wide range of health problems, like, blurred vision, headaches, toothaches, dry nose, etc. It is also found to be effective as a laxative. Sesame oil is also believed to slow down the progress of certain types of cancer. It prevents hair loss and also makes the hair darker.
Sesame oil is said to be nutritious and beneficial for health, but, moderate use is always recommended, as it has a high calorific value and high fat content. Some people may be allergic to this oil and so, those with peanut allergy, must be cautious while using this oil. You may also prepare a sesame oil substitute (for one teaspoon of sesame oil) by heating 1½ teaspoon of sesame seeds in a teaspoon of vegetable oil.
