Serena Williams Melts Down in U.S. Open, May Face Suspension
Serena Williams launched into an expletive-laced and threatening tirade after a bad call during a match that she was going to lose anyway.
The long and the short of this story is that Serena Williams couldn't handle getting her a-- kicked all over Arthur Ashe Stadium and she took the first available opportunity to unleash her frustration. Unfortunately for all involved, that opportunity came when one of the judges called a foot fault on Williams late in the match. Replays showed that the call was wrong and the fact that any call was made in that instance goes against the grain of most major tennis officiating.
But all that said, Serena was going down either way. But instead of losing gracefully after being outplayed, she lost her cool and went crazy on an unsuspecting line judge who was obviously having a bad day in her own right.
Serena Williams threatened to "shove this ball down your f------- throat" while aggressively yelling at the judge. She was penalized and lost the match and was also fined the maximum on-site tournament fine of $10,500. It is very likely that the USTA will pursue further penalties for Williams after a thorough review of the event takes place.
As might be expected, Williams has not apologized for the outburst. Instead, she issued the following statement: "While I don’t agree with the unfair line call, in the heat of battle I let my passion and emotion get the better of me and, as a result, handled the situation poorly."
