When first starting out online and you are deciding on a niche for your website theme there are some very simple steps to take to insure you succeed and not fail.

Unless you are completely comfortable with seo web design then it is best to start on a smaller scale, basically the less competition you have the easier you will find it to rank high in search engines which will result in free targeted traffic.

Using search engines to do research before you go jumping in the deep end will insure that you have chosen a website niche that will work.

Use Google to get a rough idea of what you might be up against when choosing a niche for your website.

Type a word into Google and see at the top right hand corner how many webpages you have to compete with.

Type holidays into Google and you have198 million webpages to compete with which is way to difficult for any beginner to try and accomplish.

Type seo into Google and you have 223 million webpages to compete with which is way to difficult for any beginner to try and accomplish.

Type shopping into Google and you have 1.38 billion webpages to compete with which is yet again way to difficult for any beginner to try and accomplish.

As you can see you are entering into a market that will be too difficult for you to achieve high search engine rankings.

Type ponds into Google and you have 17 million webpages to compete with. This is more realistic, maybe a little too much competition. Keep reading 17 million webpage’s is not as bad as it seems.

Type juggling into Google and you have 8 million webpages to compete with. Much easier to achieve results.

As you can see the less competiton you have the easier you will find it to build a successful website. Under 20 million is doable for a novice and under 10 million is in my opinion the best place to start. You can choose a tighter niche which will be easier but remember the tighter the niche the less traffic.

From the above examples the pond choice gave a return of 17 million webpage’s but straight away you can at least cut that number in half as half of them will not even be a website based on ponds, they will have just used the word pond within their content.

That leaves 8 million webpages to compete with and did you know only 10% of all websites are seo web designed. That wipes out another 90% of the competiion leaving you only 800 thousand webpages to compete with, and lots of those pages will come from the same websites.

This exercise only helps with choosing a great website niche that you know can be a success, there are other many seo elements you need to learn when building your website to insure you reach the top of search engines.
