Self defense is an act of protecting or defending oneself from unwarranted attention. It is also accepted as a legal justification by many courts, depending upon the nature, provocation and its repercussion. As the name suggests, it is a pepper spray that contains fine grains of pepper that causes an attacker's eye veins to swell, rendering him temporarily blind. Certain sprays are so powerful that they tend to swell up the mucous membrane, making it difficult for the offender to breathe. They are available in many sizes, and can easily slip into a handbag or a pocket.

Stun Guns: A stun gun is a battery-operated gun, which produces a high voltage current when fired. It is almost like giving the person an electrical shock at a point of contact. A stun gun is small and a hand-held weapon. When the stun gun is fired upon an offender it results in muscle spasms, confusion and disorientation to the person. The offender is unable to move his or her body, and mostly will fall on the ground. Tasers are another type of stun guns.

Personal Alarms: Personal alarms are small battery-operated devices that are capable of producing a very loud attention seeking noise. It almost raises an alarm. The personal alarm is small in size and plays a dual role as a means of defense. First, the noise it emits is so loud and screechy that it completely disorients the attacker, and secondly it can easily attract the attention of a lot of passersby, something that your attacker does not want.

Telescopic Batons: Telescopic Batons are easy to use, made of solid steel and one of the most popular self defense weapons used by security personnel. They are expandable and come in varying lengths. They have a loop with which one can tie the baton to the waist, and give a really frightening impression to the offender. Using the baton requires a little practice, not only to expand the telescopic baton to its original length, but also attacking the offending person.

Brass Knuckles: Brass knuckles are deadly weapons that can deliver a blow with some serious damage to the person. As the name suggests, it is made of brass, and has holes that allow the fingers to pass through them to get a good grip while punching someone. But one needs to be careful while using them, it could hurt your fingers as well. But then, what is a little hurt while warding off more harm!

While using self defense weapons, it is imperative to know the extent of legal acceptance of the state. Many states in the US prohibit the use of some weapons of self defense, whereas some states require licensing. A self defense weapon is essential for both, men and women. They are small in size, handy and can be easily carried around. There are many places one can purchase them from. Choose the best one for yourself, it is better to have them around rather that be sorry.
