Seizure Medications

These are prescription drugs administered after diagnosing the type of seizure the patient is suffering from.
In simple terms, seizures are defined as temporary involuntary contraction of muscles (convulsions), which can occur in any part of the body. In some cases, uncontrollable shaking (convulsions) is accompanied by loss of sensation or consciousness. These involuntary movement of muscles or seizures, generally last for a short while (few seconds).

Causes of Seizure
As we all know, the movement of the muscles is controlled by the brain. The brain sends electrical signals through the nerves in order to control bodily movements. In case of seizures, there is excessive stimulation of electrical signals in some part of the brain, resulting in seizures. One can also say that seizure is a type of brain disorder in which the brain cells unnecessarily produce electrical signals, leading to uncontrollable shaking. When these involuntary contractions recur at regular intervals the condition is referred as seizure disorder.

Types of Seizures
As aforementioned, seizures are a result of temporary brain dysfunction in which there is an abnormal generation of electrical signals. When these disturbances in the brain's electrical activity remain confined to a specific part of the brain, it is referred as partial seizures. However, when the abnormal activity of electrical impulses is spread throughout the brain, it is known as generalized seizure.

Partial Seizure Medications
As explained, in case of partial seizures, the electrical disturbances occurring inside the brain, are localized. A specific portion of the brain is affected and there is no loss of consciousness. It is typically marked by temporary involuntary shaking. In such circumstances, medications that may be prescribed:
  • Lyrica
  • Trileptal
  • Zonegran
  • Keppra
Generalized Seizure Medications
This is a severe form of seizure in which the whole body shakes uncontrollably. As the abnormal electrical activity in the brain is not localized, the person is bound to lose consciousness. Medications may also be administered intravenously to control seizures:
  • Dilantin
  • Topamax
  • Neurontin
  • Lamictal
  • Gabitril
  • Felbatol
  • Carbatrol
Caution

Keep in mind that medications prescribed for the treatment of seizures are classified as prescription drugs. They simply cannot be taken without consulting a well qualified doctor. Any medicine works, when it is taken in the right dosage. The same holds true for these medicines. An effective way to control seizures is to take the medicine in the correct dosage. Doctors will give valuable advice regarding dosage required to control the type of seizure.

Side Effects
Even though these prescription drugs help to manage brain disorders, patients complain about few side effects. Usually, adverse reactions from these drugs do not occur when taken in the right dosage:
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Desire to eat food decreases
  • Skin rash
Severe side effects such as speech problems, behavioral changes or kidney stones can also occur, but is a rarity. To be on the safer side, taking it in the prescribed dosage, as instructed by the doctor, is the key to lower the chances of side effects.
