The job of a security guard is to safeguard, patrol and monitor any theft or violence in the premises where he has been assigned duty. For a large organization, the duties of security guards are directed by a higher security director, while for small buildings, he may work alone. In both cases, the security guard is responsible for serving his employer by providing safety against any law violator and determining any sort of disturbances that will incur losses to the client. Some organizations may train their employees regarding security tips and job responsibilities.
The actual duties of a security guard depends on whether he is employed for a static security position or a mobile position. In the former case, the guard works in a particular location for specific hours. He may be assigned with security systems, like, alarms, arms, close circuit security cameras, etc. As part of the job profile, the security guard closely monitors the visitors as well as the property. Some employees assign the security guard to monitor the entry and exit of employees. For those who are employed for mobile positions, the security guard either patrols on foot or roams in scooters and / or cars. He is assigned a defined zone for performing security checks.
The job description for security guard also includes writing daily reports regarding the activities and any disturbances occurring during his serving period. If unusual circumstances, like, entry of unauthorized individuals or property damages occur during his duty period, then he should include these in the report. Such a security report serves as a reference tool for determining possible damages to the client or company. In case of fire and other emergencies, the guard should call fire departments or other appropriate service providers. Last but not the least, the security guard also checks lights, alarm system, windows, doors and gates.
Speaking about the educational qualification and training required to become a security guard, he / she has to earn a high school certificate and undergo security training. There are several schools that provide special courses for security guards. In some states, getting a license is mandatory to become a security guard, whereas in other regions, only security training is sufficient to apply for jobs in the security field. Security guards are employed either directly by the companies or indirectly by private organizations / agencies that provide security services.
Once training is completed, he / she can apply for security jobs either in private sector or in government agencies. The pay scale of a security guard ranges between $20,000 - $35,000 per year. With experience, the security guard may achieve a higher position, like, security director or supervisor. At times, the job profile of a security guard may be dangerous. Hence, while taking a decision, one should always consider the duties and the associated circumstances of security jobs.
