The day went by slowly. Having to walk everywhere with Afton and watch girls hang off him and touch him. I'm so glad I didn't have to go through high-school. I'd already seen 2 girl run to the bathroom crying and 5 boys holding their eye after being punched by a girl they just violated. But I had to admit, I was surprised that Afton wasn't all over any of the girls. Even the gorgeous ones I would have expected him to be with. I was sitting on the bleachers during my free period which was the last period and Afton's football practice. I took out my sketch book and started drawing. One thing that my now half metal self had kept is my ability to draw and paint. It was my passion. Slowly my piece of charcoal drew a girl peaking around a bush in a garden. I smiled as the girl started resembling me as a child. I felt breathing on my neck and quickly my inhuman heart sped up. "That's beautiful." A voice whispered. I gasped and shut my sketch book. I turned to see Afton smiling. "Your really talented."
I cleared my throat and fought the blush that was invading my cheeks. "Um..thanks."
"Ya..can I see more?" He grinned.
"S-sure." I handed him my book a bit unsure and he opened it and gently flipped through the delicate pages. He smiled at some pictures making me wring my hands self-consciously. At one point I saw his eyes get wide.
"This girl...how do you know her.." He opened to a portrait I'd drawn from memory of what I looked like before the mechanical surgeries.
"Why?"
"I knew her..when she was little. She lived in my old town. She was in my 2nd grade class. She went missing one year..they never found her." His eyes teared up. He..he knew me?
"What was she like?" I asked. I can't remember my old self.
"Beautiful. Even as a little girl." His eyes became far off and he spoke of me so fondly. "She was really sweet. Quiet. Always had a pretty yellow bow in her hair that brought out these strange..golden eyes." I gasped and quickly moved my eyes to the floor before he noticed. "Kind of like yours actually." He smiled and raised my chin to look in my eyes. I turned away quickly before he saw anymore similarities. "I used to have the biggest crush on her." He chuckled softly. "Yet..her name escapes me. All I remember is that it was unique...beautiful."
"Hmm.. well I have to go." I stood up quickly but he grabbed my hand.
"Wait...you never told me how you knew her."
"I saw her missing adds in the paper." My eyes teared up remembering getting the paper and reading articles about me. Until that one day when they stopped. That was the hardest part. Knowing that the government had the power to make everyone forget me...well...I guess except for Afton. "I thought she was cute so I drew her." I answered shortly then pulled my hand away, ignoring the sparks between our hands and walked away. I sat in my car and waited for him to get in his volvo and drive away. I followed till I saw he was safety in his drive way then drove him. Exhausted and confused.
