Damien made Emily food the night they returned from the hospital. They had sat up and talked about things. Especially the things that included Clare.
It had been a month since the night Emily was in the hospital, though. Things with her and Damien had went back to the way they used to be. The only difference was that Emily was starting to show.
"I think it’s time to tell your mom that she’s going to be a grandma," Damien said as he helped Emily off the bed.
"I don’t know if now’s the right time, though," Emily argued.
"It’s definitely the right time! And you know it is, Emily."
"No, no. We can wait another month or so…"
"No, we can’t. If you don’t tell her then I will."
Emily’s eye bugged out, and her jaw dropped. She couldn’t believe Damien would threaten her about this! She wasn’t ready to have Rachel know she’s pregnant.
"You can’t! Damien, you wouldn’t!" Emily yelled at him.
"I would! She’s your mother; she needs to know!"
"Fine. Tell her! Go ahead!"
Damien sighed. Emily knew that if she told him to do it instead of arguing with him not to that he wouldn’t do it.
"Two weeks," Damien said through gritted teeth.
"Only two?"
"Two."
"Fine. Two," Emily agreed.
Damien walked over to where Emily was sitting on the porch. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. She momentarily closed her eyes and sighed.
"Sorry I yelled at you," she told Damien.
"I’m sorry too. For threatening you. I really shouldn’t have."
"No, you’re right. We have to tell her sometime and I’m already showing. If I can get the courage up to tell her then we’ll tell her before two weeks is up. If not, you’re going to have to help me tell her in two weeks."
"Alright," Damien said with a smile.
Damien sat beside Emily on the porch swing. Emily didn’t say anything else, and neither did Damien. They silently watched as the sky turned from evening to night.
Emily almost fell asleep when the thunder roared. From in the distance she saw lightening strike.
"I love you," she whispered so low she thought Damien didn’t hear her.
"I love you, too," he replied a moment later.
Emily smiled contently.
A few moments later it began raining. Emily had always wanted to dance in the rain. Now would be the perfect time.
"Come on," she said as she got up, pulling Damien along with her.
"What?" Damien asked, bewildered.
"Dance with me."
"In the rain?"
"Yes!"
Damien chuckled, following Emily to the yard. She wrapped her arms around Damien’s neck, laying her head on his chest. Damien wrapped an arm around Emily, laying his hand on her waist, and held her head to his chest with his other hand.
The rain poured down, hitting Emily softly. She didn’t really care if Damien told Rachel she was pregnant. All she really cared about was that she was with Damien, and was going to have his baby.
All her life she had never loved anyone as much as Damien. She didn’t think she could ever love anyone as much as she did him. Emily had thought about it for a while, and finally decided that she and Damien had to be soul mates.
If something ever happened to Damien, or he just left her, her whole world would die. Everything meant nothing if she couldn’t have it with Damien.
Emily raised her head from Damien’s chest. She tilted her head up to look Damien in the eye. She saw different things in his beautiful green eyes. She got a glimpse of love, admiration, and other’s.
Damien leaned his head down, lightly kissing Emily on the lips. She hadn’t realized they weren’t dancing anymore until they broke away from their kiss.
Emily smiled as Damien rested his forehead on hers. Everything was perfect between them. And no matter what it took, Emily told herself she would keep things perfect between them.
As long as Jason, or Clare, didn’t show up.
***************************************
Two weeks were up. Emily never got the courage to tell her mother. And now, Damien was going to force her to tell Rachel what she said she couldn’t the last time they argued about it: her pregnancy.
Emily’s nerves started shattering as she walked with Damien to the living room. Her mother would be arriving home at any time. Then, Emily was going to tell her about the baby.
"Maybe we should just wait a few more days. It wouldn’t hurt anything to wait," Emily repeated the words for the seventh time.
"Stop it, Emily. You’re not talking yourself out of it this time, or me for that matter. We’re telling her today," Damien told her firmly.
"Fine."
Emily folded her arms across her chest stubbornly. She didn’t want to tell her mom. And even though Damien meant well, she didn’t like him bossing her around.
They both sat on the couch in the living room. The minutes flew by, and before Emily could react, her mother was opening the front door. Emily started shaking.
She didn’t know why it was scaring her so much to tell her mom. She was eighteen for crying out loud! She shouldn’t be so afraid to tell her mother that she’s pregnant.
When Rachel entered the room, Damien cleared his throat. Emily wanted to die.
"Rachel," Damien started politely.
"Hey Damien, hey Emily," Rachel said, smiling the whole time.
"We need to speak with you, if you don’t mind."
"Of course. Just give me a minute to put this stuff up," she told him, holding up the grocery bags she had.
Damien nodded and smiled. Emily was still freaking out.
Emily reached up and, with Damien’s shirt sleeve, wiped the sweat off her forehead. She was sweating like a pig.
"Just calm down," Damien muttered to her.
"I’m trying!" she whisper-shouted back.
Damien rolled his eyes at her.
"I’ll do all the talking. Just try not to look so guilty about it all."
Emily sighed, agreeing to the talking thing. She definitely didn’t want to be the one to tell her mother. Besides, Damien was much better with bad news than she was.
Rachel came back a few moments later. The first thing she did was walk to Emily.
"You don’t look well. Are you alright?" she asked.
"Fine," Emily squeaked.
"Uh-huh."
She laid her hand on Emily’s forehead, checking her temperature. After a moment, she pulled her hand back and took a seat across from both Damien and Emily.
"We really need to tell you something," Damien said to Rachel.
"Okay. Shoot."
"Well… A little while ago, Emily and I were alone. And you know teenagers, surely. When they’re alone, things tend to happen. That’s what happened with us, only we were in too much of a rush to really think things through. And now we’re paying the price," he said, as calm as he had ever been before.
"Uh-huh," Rachel said faintly.
"You understand what I’m saying, right?"
"Yes."
"I’m pregnant," Emily blurted, almost as if she had just realized this herself.
"I know," she said to the couch.
Rachel stared at the space between Damien and Emily without seeing it. Her forehead crinkled, making her look older than her actual age.
"I’m sorry mom," Emily whispered, trying to hold back her tears.
With that, Rachel looked up. She didn’t say anything to Emily. Instead, she turned to Damien.
"How long?" she asked.
"How long?" Damien repeated, confused by her question.
"How long has it been since… ‘it’ happened?"
"Oh. It was prom night," he admitted sheepishly.
"A few months?!" Rachel practically yelled.
"Yes?" Emily answered her.
"And you couldn’t tell me sooner? I could have done something. Anything to help you out and make it easier on you! My god, why didn’t you tell me sooner?"
"I was afraid! I thought you’d yell at me. Or worse, be disappointed that I would do something as stupid as I did!" Emily sobbed.
"I’m not disappointed in you," Rachel told her earnestly.
"You’re not? Why aren’t you disappointed in me?"
"Why do you want me to be disappointed in you?"
"I dunno! I just thought you would be, but you’re acting all nice about it and everything. It’s kind of freaking me out!" Emily admitted.
"Well. It was wrong of you to have sex without a condom, true. And you’re much too young for a baby. However, you’re old enough to make your own decisions. I’m just glad that you didn’t do something stupid, like have an abortion or something."
Emily sighed. She didn’t know what to think. She had freaked herself out over telling her mother, and she ended up being cool with it? It was just plain weird!
"Do you know what it is, yet?" Rachel asked with pure curiosity.
"Yes. It’s a girl," Damien said.
"A girl…" she trailed off.
Emily was about to tell her what her due date was when the door bell rang. Rachel told them to hold on a moment while she answered the door. A few moments later, Rachel entered the living room with the weirdest look on her face.
"Who was it?" Emily asked.
"It’s Clare. She wants to talk to you," Rachel told Emily.
"Me?"
"Yeah?"
"Why me?" Emily asked incredulously.
"I don’t know… but she’s still on the porch waiting for you."
"Tell her to leave," Damien growled.
"No! I want to know what she wants to talk about."
Damien studied Emily for a few heartbeats. Finally, he sighed and nodded.
"If she tries to touch you in any way, just scream and I’ll rip her head off for you," he said before Emily disappeared around the corner.
