Searching for Tomorrow - Part 9
Ria: Hey girl. I just read your comment and the one before. Thanks for liking my story. I think that a lot of people don't like it. Although I did the poll and mostly everyone voted yes, but they don't comment. But anyway thanks. You're the best.
She started to walk away but then turned back.
"I forgot to give this to you," she said. She pulled a necklace with a little two on it. I recognized it. That was a gift she had given to me. Every year she would give me another gold number. I reached ten before she stopped doing it.
I looked at her in wonder.
"You threw at me the day you left. I thought you might want to start the tradition with Valeria." She said handing me the necklace and a box.
She walked away before I opened the box. In it were gold numbers that reached to 19. She had bought them.
On the bottom of the box, a note was hidden. She wrote 'a gold birthday number for every year you've been precious to me. You're my golden star.'
I started to cry. She used to say that. Every year at midnight she would give me that golden number and repeat those words.
I silently promised her that I would start that tradition.
An hour later, Mike arrived with Valeria in his arms. She wiggled to get down. He set her down in her feet and she ran off to me.
"Mommy!" She said gleefully. She hugged my legs.
"Today's my birthday." She said.
"I know, sweetie," I said. I picked her up and sat her down on my lap. Taking the necklace, I placed around Valeria's neck. She took it in her hands but didn't pull it. She pulled it up to her face. I smiled.
She let it drop back to her neck. She giggled and kissed her hands and threw at me. I took it in my hands then smacked to my face. She giggled more.
She got down from my legs and ran into the house. She let out a gleeful shriek. I followed her in and saw her run around touching the strings of the balloons and the table-cloth.
Not a lot of people were coming besides my best friends. A couple of people from college are coming. Some of them with their kids.
Some people had already started to arrive. I took the initiative to start putting the food up. My mom had always thrown good parties. She would always cook a lot and always had got lots of candy for the kids. Of course, this was before she started drinking...
But anyway, I learned from a party master. Mike and I cooked a bunch of food. We made lasagna and pasta. Rice, beans and chicken. Also, green salad, potato salad and pasta salad.
After the food was out, everyone picked up a plate and began to eat. There was great chatter and someone hooked up their iPod to my stereo.
Everyone brought a gift and put it on the table. An hour passed by and the table was almost full.
Valeria was having fun with the other children. They were running around the house giggling and shouting. They played games and were having such a great time.
Soon after it was time to light the candles and cut the cake.
