Mara Buxbaum, Penn’s publicist, confirmed the split Friday but did not give any further details. The couple met on the set of 1990’s State of Grace. They moved in together shortly after meeting and were married in 1996. The couple has two children – 16-year old Dylan Frances and 14-year old Hopper Jack. Penn, 47, said in a past interview, "Marriage ain’t easy, but it’s great most of the time. I love Robin. I’ve always loved her."

This is Penn’s second marriage. He was previously married to Madonna in August 1985. The couple was divorced after a tumultuous marriage in September 1989. Wright Penn was married for two years to actor Dane Witherspoon. Neither marriage produced any children.

Besides starring in State of Grace together the couple also starred in 1997’s She So Lovely and 1998’s Hurly Burly. Wright Penn, 41, has also starred in two flicks that Penn directed, The Crossing Guard and The Pledge. She first gained fame for her role in 1987’s The Princess Bride and went on to earn a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Forrest Gump. Penn has come a long way from his turn as stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He won an Academy Award for his role in 2003’s Mystic River and earned Best Actor Nominations for his performances in Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, and I Am Sam. Penn recently directed the movie Into the Wild which has been nominated for four SAG awards and two Golden Globes.
