The term 'sea bass' does not refer to one, but multiple varieties of fish, which are native to subtropical and tropical waters. The common fish species which may be referred to as sea bass include barramundi, European sea bass, giant sea bass, suzuki (Japanese sea bass), white sea bass, Chilean sea bass, potato cod, and black sea bass. They belong to a family known as serranidae. Most of these are known to be popular in cooking and eating as seafood.
