There are many websites which offer a bouquet of features, like a chat room, web forum and email accounts. Therefore, one should keep in mind that the screen name would be used in all these areas and come up with a sensible screen name.

Also, it would depend on whether one is signing up for chat or on the website for professional reasons or personal reasons. People joining websites and chat for professional reasons have to be extra careful. One basic rule is that the screen name should not be offensive to anyone. The screen name should be religion, gender, race and even unfortunate events safe. There has been an example of a person named ‘Anthrax’ being kicked out of chat rooms during the Sept 9/11 attacks. And the reason was good enough, families who had lost their loved ones during those attacks were on that same chat room.

Intelligent Names

There is a fundamental rule of Internet Screen Names. And that is:

"Names with figures in them are the death knell for the Internet social scene for anyone’. That is it. that’s the rule right there, in black and white. There is no going around it, past it, over it, whatever. Do not ever, under any circumstances, use names like xyz123 in chat rooms or websites.

Another rule is to try to have names having their first alphabet in Caps, like the name would be ‘Adrian’. Another suggestion during choosing names is to desist from naming yourself Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. I mean, everyone knows you aren’t Brad Pitt, and people who believe that the sexiest man in the world would be sitting on his desktop trying to make friends online, don’t need to be on your social list anyway.

But to be fair, celebrities like Cher and Bruce Willis have actually been known to chat online in real life. Bruce Willis did it during the release of Die Hard 4.0.

Another way of coming up with an interesting name is to look at the concept of the chat. For example, if the chat room is a room about Harry Potter, JKRowlingfan would not be a very bad name… other than all these rules, it’s entirely your decision which name you take.
