Scottish Wedding Legalities

A guide to getting married in Scotland
Scotland is a beautiful place to get married and there are many options available for how you go about it. These options come with different laws to govern them so here is an overview of the important laws that you need to know to have a Scottish wedding. You have the choice of either a religious, civil or humanist ceremony and you can get married almost anywhere you can think of. This was made possible in 2002 by the Marriage Act. This means that you can choose to get married on a beach up a mountain or in your own garden if the mood takes you.

If you choose a religious service you will need to be married by a Priest, Minister or any other religious person who has the necessary authority. It is also worth noting that if you are wanting a religious service you will normally be expected to be a member of a congregation so church attendance will be necessary. You must register your intent to marry to the registrar in the district that you plan to marry in at least fifteen days prior to the big day. This can be done three months before the wedding.

If you are planning on getting hitched in Scotland but are coming from overseas you will need to obtain a certificate from your local civil authority which will state that are no legal issues affecting your ability to get married. To find out more you can visit the website of the Register office for Scotland . There you will be able to find a list of all the available registration offices in Scotland. The wedding venue that you choose will normally have a good knowledge of the options available so make sure to make use of it.
