School Days - Chapter 11

Amy is just living her life, getting by with little of any of consequence happening. That all changes when Jake moves to town...
Ok...I really need to learn to read over what I type... Sorry for the ridiculous amount of inconsistencies in the last chapter - feel free to berate me for such things in the future, that way maybe I'll learn!
Anyway, was kinda in a rush the last time I posted so just a quick thank you for all those who voted in the poll - had no idea that many people were following the story! I hope what I have planned doesn't disappoint those who voted for me to follow Amy and Jake around some more.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Amy didn't go into school the next day, spending time both at the hospital and at home, catching up on sleep from the night before. Her grandfather was doing better - so the doctors said, anyway - but he still hadn't regained consciousness.
It was mid-afternoon, and Amy had just woken up. She ventured downstairs, feeling slightly disconcerted by the fact that it was nearly 4 and she was only just waking up. Amy found her dad in the kitchen, just finishing a cup of coffee. Seeing her, he put his mug down and quickly enveloped her in a hug, not saying anything. She was very appreciative of this - she still hadn't completely comprehended what happened, especially after how happy she had been earlier in the day.
And she still hadn't told her parents about Jake. She knew that this probably wasn't the best time, but it was important to her and she wanted them to know. She was just about to say something to her dad when he pulled back from the hug and looked at her.
"I'm heading back to the hospital now, sweetheart. Want to come with?"
Amy shook her head. She had spent most of the night there and had no desire to return just yet. "No, thanks dad. I'll just hang out here a bit, find out what I missed in school today."
He nodded in agreement and understanding. "Ok," he replied. "I've just dropped the boys of at your Aunty Jane so you can just relax here for a bit."
"Thanks, dad," Amy half-whispered, looking forward to having some time to think over all the information she had received in the past 24 hours.

Amy went back upstairs to get dressed, calling a goodbye down to her dad as he left a few minutes later. When she was done, she grabbed quickly made a sandwich before grabbing the phone and flopping onto the sofa in the living room.
She was just about to dial Ella's number when the doorbell rang. Sighing, she pulled herself up and shuffled over to open it. Half-tempted to leave it, only the thought that it might be friends of her mum asking after grandfather, persuaded her to leave the sofa.
Setting the phone down first, she was just about to open the door when the doorbell was rung once again.
"Geez," Amy grumbled under her breath, "give me a chance to answer the door already."
Jake was stood on the other side, the most worried expression on his face.
Amy stood there open-mouthed for a second before he pulled her into a hug. Jake was the last person she had expected to see - she hadn't even known he knew where she lived. But then she realized that she was incredibly happy to see him and just let him hug her to himself, tucking her head into his neck and hugging him back, relaxing into his grip.
"I was so worried about you," he whispered into his ear. "You weren't on the bus and you weren't answering your phone. I thought something must have happened to you." Amy felt a small bubble of happiness as he said this. "It wasn't until I saw Ella in drama that she explained everything," Jake continued. "I wanted to leave right then, but didn't think the teachers would agree with that particularly." He chuckled a little at this.
They stood there for a few moments longer, not saying anything, both just happy, before Amy pulled away, suddenly a little self-conscious that they were stood on her doorstep in full view of about 10 houses up and down the street.
She blushed a little, "Would you life to come in?" she queried gently.

Jake glanced behind him, and Amy noticed Pierce leaning against the side of the car right by her front gate. He nodded once at her, his usual stony-expression softening a little. She returned this with a small smile of her own.
Jake glanced back at her before walking down the path. He and Pierce stood talking for a little while before both nodded in agreement, Jake a little reluctantly and with a slight frown on his face. Jake returned to Amy, still standing in the doorway. "Would it be okay if Pierce came in as well?" Amy hesitated for a second, prompting Jake to explain a little. "He says he doesn't feel comfortable leaving us here unchaperoned," Jake said, grimacing a little. "His words, not mine," he added.
Though Amy had the feeling that there was more to it than that, she didn't push the issue. She was just happy to see Jake, and since their car journey the day before, she was no longer intimidated by Pierce. She simply nodded her acquiescence before opening the door a little wider to permit them entrance.
She led them first to the living room and, when they were both settled, offered them a drink. Jake declined, but Pierce asked for a coffee. She retreated into the kitchen and made a coffee for Pierce and some tea for herself. She returned to Jake and Pierce having a heated, yet nearly silent, discussion, the tension almost palpable. Deciding she didn't want to get in the middle of whatever it was she excused herself back into the kitchen under the pretense of looking for biscuits.
Upon returning a second time, the discussion had ended and Pierce looked somewhat more relaxed but Jake was frowning again, though he carefully smoothed his brow when he realized that Amy was in the room again.

Perching on the edge of an armchair she cleared her throat, a little unsure how to proceed. Jake helped out by asking how her grandfather was doing.
She spent the next few minutes filling him in before Pierce interrupted. His father, apparently, was a doctor and he helped to allay her fears, if only a little. Once this conversation finished, Amy was once again at a loss. She could talk to both of them perfectly easily individually - why not at the same time?
Caught up in pondering the reasons behind this, she almost missed Jake's next question.
"...your brothers?" he asked.
"Huh?" she replied. "Sorry, what was that? I wasn't paying attention."
"Where are your brothers?" Jake repeated, a slight smile on his lips.
Amy paused for a second, not recalling ever telling him that she had brothers. Figuring she must have mentioned it in passing at some point, she disregarded the slight unease that came with this. "My dad dropped them off at his sisters' before heading back to the hospital."
As she said this, she realized something else. How had Pierce known that they would be here 'unchaperoned' if he didn't stay? There were enough cars parked on the street for one to belong to them, and they had arrived at least 10 minutes after her father left. This confused her immensely, which must have shown on her face.
"Amy," Jake asked, a worried expression on his face, "are you okay?"
Her eyes focused properly again, and she nodded. "Yeah," she said slowly. "I just got distracted trying to work something out." She plastered a grin on her face. "Sorry, I've been a little out of it all day." Jake nodded in understanding.
Amy and Jake spent the next few minutes on small talk, with Pierce adding the odd comment, before Pierce's phone rang. "Excuse me," he said before stepping into the hall and closing the door firmly behind himself.
As soon as the door was shut Jake hurried over to her and pulled her up into another hug, this one a little fiercer than the more tender one they had shared earlier. He let go quickly but didn't move very far away from her.
"That's my dad," he stated.
"How can...?" Amy began, before Jake cut her off.
"Doesn't matter," he said. "It's my dad, which means we'll be leaving soon. I didn't want Pierce to stay for this very reason." He ran his hands through his hair in agitation. "I'd love to be able to stay here with you Amy, but I can't. Remember that I want to though." He smiled at her, a perfect grin that made it a little hard for her to breathe for a second.
"That's fine," Amy whispered. "I need to call Ella and Tina anyway - I'll be fine." Jake nodded, a gentler smile on his face. He grabbed her chin and guided her lips to his own.

The kiss, whilst firm, was over so quickly that Amy didn't have time to react. She stood there stunned for a second before meeting his eyes.
They were glistening with happiness, and Amy felt a huge grin break out on her face. This was soon mirrored on Jake's.
"What's your number?" he asked.
"You have my number," Amy replied, a little confused, her smile faltering a little.
"Your landline," he clarified, "in case I can't get through on your mobile."
Amy reeled off her number, and Jake put it into his mobile, promising to call later that night to check up on her. He tucked her hair behind her ears before putting his hand on her cheek and Amy felt a thrilled at the thought that he might be about to kiss her again. But before he could do anything more, Pierce re-entered the room and the moment was over. Jake instantly took his hand from her face and took a step back.
"We have to go," was all Pierce said before leaving both the room and the house.
"Bye" she whispered to Jake.
He smiled at her before pulling her into another quick hug and kissing her on the end of her nose. "I'll talk to you soon," he promised before striding assuredly from the room. Amy heard the front door close and an engine rev.
By the time she had got the front door open again, they had gone.
