Stephen King - One for the Road

Stephen King’s One For The Road is just a short story, but it is so scary that we can’t possibly leave it out of this list of scariest stories ever written. A couple of men meet in a bar and discuss the legend of the vampires in and around the nearby village of Salem’s Lot. One For The Road is without any doubt Stephen King’s scariest story of and can be found in the short story collection Night Shift and as a chapter in his novel Salem’s Lot.

John Saul - Second Child

The most popular boy in school invites the ugly Darcy to the prom and then makes a fool out of her. Darcy kills herself, but years later, her spirit is still wandering through the village. Second Child is an early John Saul story, but his best work so far.

Vanessa Morgan - Drowned Sorrow

Drowned Sorrow by Vanessa Morgan is one of the scariest stories ever written. Its scary atmosphere will haunt you for weeks. It’s the story of a village where the inhabitants commit grisly murders when it rains, but leave the village deserted with the first rays of sunshine. Beneath the lake’s surface, an eerie presence watches… and waits… Waits to reveal a tragic past drowned in mystery and fear. One that doesn’t bode well for visitors. A mother and her teenage daughter visit the village and it is unsure if they will ever be able to get out again. It’s no wonder that Vanessa Morgan has been called the female version of Stephen King.

James Herbert - The Haunting

James Herbert’s story The Haunting is similar to the movie The Others with Nicole Kidman. Scientist David Ash is assigned to research the creepy occurrences in an old castle. The inhabitants of the castle are kind, but they possess a dark secret that David will scare the hell out of him.

Kittens - Dean R. Koontz

Another short story by yet another master of suspense: Dean R. Koontz. Kittens, which is part of the short story collection Strange Highways, is Dean Koontz’s darkest and scariest story. Other scary stories in Strange Highways are The Black Pumpkin, Trapped and Twilight of the Dawn.
