2. Broken
How come she was spending money on someone who wasn't even her true relative? Wasn't Sophie just an orphan born from a lady who had been bitten during delivery? Wasn't she a vampire? How could she care for another vampire? Monique noticed the sulky look and asked, "What's up that brain of yours?" Evan's expression changed immediately as if the peculiar expression hadn't been there. He did not reply, just nodded. Monique flared slightly and retorted, "Evan, you must learn to play second fiddle..." Evan angrily cut her off, "I don't take orders from..." Monique said her lips turning magenta and her hair flying around, equally angrily, "I know you don't take orders from Vampires; if you want to stay away from your so - called - fate, learn to take orders from me or from the Queen herself!" She stomped out angrily, Evan stood there helpless. One of the most peculiar feelings he used to have- having agreed on the wrong thing, supporting the wrong person, betraying someone who cared. It had happened when he wasn't old enough to know what a vampire was. And when everybody had despised her for being a vampire, his insecurities and the desire to be closer to his very busy parents made him shout at her, kick the final love out of his heart. Since then he was very isolated. He didn't want to be close to his family and he never really grew up to be a responsible person. And now, here she was in front of him, as desperate, as angry as that day. He wished she would come back, give him her motherly hug, and make him feel that reality wasn't always as bad as it was supposed to be. A chill went through his spine as a gust of wind opened the huge window. He forced his leaden legs across the room and towards the kitchen where Monique had stomped off to.

The angry magenta color had faded from her lips. She looked so human to Evan. He had never known what exactly to do in such situations. Tears streamed down her face as her mascara ran down. She wiped her tears in a vain effort to hide them. Evan turned a chair and squatted on it opposite her. He observed her with curious eyes; she trembled and refused to face him. He stepped over and said softly, "Listen Monique, I didn't intend to hurt you so..." Monique looked at him with a face that sheared his heart - he had made her cry for all the wrong reasons. Evan brought his chair closer and sat down gently placing a hand on her shoulder. He continued with a guilt brimmed voice, "I don't think I understand vampires so well. Their concept on Doran was very... uh..." he searched for words that wouldn't hurt, "cruel, you know, so I never really understood how to behave with people who are vampires." Bursting into a fresh bout of tears, Monique buried her face in her palms. Evan held her shoulders and she cried in his shirt softly. Her memories filled with pain and devastation. Evan had wanted her to handle him and here he was consoling her that everything was just a big mistake. Evan stood there feeling lost in a world of emotions. After what seemed like hours, Monique calmed down and brought herself a glass of some red liquid. Evan looked on curiously as she added a dark powder to it. She heard Evan say, "How about you explain what are the Scarlet Diamond and that Queen of yours?" Monique nodded as she sipped the red thing. She replied knowledge in her eyes, "The scarlet diamond is the seed of Baeyan's life source..." Evan piped in, "Baeyan, as in your planet?" Monique nodded affirmatively and continued, "It is the seed of a plant whose parts secrete 'shost'." Evan rolled his eyes and said, "Secrete what?" Monique said in a louder pitch, "Shost! Like the humans have milk, we have shost. It is a sweet beverage whose constituents are the same as human blood, only shost is so much more delicious...." As she added more of the powder, Evan tried to avoid the goose bumps that saddled his arm and thought, "Hell! That is blood she is drinking!" Monique looked at him with a questioning look. He supplemented a feeble question, "Yeah, so what about it?" Monique pondered and said, "Well, you see, seven queens earlier and 742 years back, all the scarlet diamond saplings were wiped out and not even a trace remained. Since then the vampires started migrating to earth." "Why only earth, why not some other planet? What about Doran?" Monique answered his query in a pat, "Doran's atmosphere is very difficult to penetrate. Earth has no knowledge about our existence. Very few of them know that we actually live in their intrinsic environment and feed off their blood. The blood of Doran is high in heparin. It is an anti coagulant." She blushed slightly and said, "Doranian blood is a delicacy on Baeyan...." His shocked expression gave the desired response to Monique. He looked ready to pack his bags and leave. She threw back her head and laughed, "Doranian blood cannot be consumed under normal circumstances! It is highly dangerous as it acts as an addictive drug." The color returned to his face as he asked her, "How did you survive on Doran then?" Monique said in a voice brimmed with anger, "I had signed a contract with the Great Advisor, that allowed me to stay on in Doran only as long as I didn't harm a Doranian. I was asked to be yours and Eric's nanny because no one else was capable of protecting you both through the war..." memories flooded her mind as she recalled that evening when she had her last talk with the Great Advisor, "Then one day I discovered a file that could prove he was leaking information to the other planets. It was about Doran's atmosphere. Someone was conspiring against the planet and that had to be of more priority than any civil war..." She saw the ashen look on his face and stopped for a while before continuing, "When I asked him about this, he seemed to have understood my intentions of informing the king. The very next day was the nightmare I had accepted." Evan placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and egged her on, "Before I could see the king, his men arrested me, I hadn't even worn my uniform," under his palm he felt her tremble but she continued, "They accused me of feeding on your friend Leona's blood. The previous night Princess Leona had come to attend a family dinner and then when I was putting her to bed later that night, I heard footsteps outside the royal guest quarters." Evan recalled that vampires had a very sound sense of hearing. Evan prodded gently, "And then what happened?" "The next thing I knew, they were taking away the Princess back to the main palace. After that I never saw her again. The next morning the King was furious that I was a vampire and that this fact was hidden from him. My self- respect didn't allow me to plead the king to let me see the two young princes. I packed my bags and left with my head held high." Evan pushed thoughts the thoughts of how he had yelled at her when he had seen his father order her out of the planet. She said in between sobs, "I never had a chance to prove myself right, never had a chance to see you grow up. Instead you were scolding me for lying to you, for harming Princess Leona...." She cried for some more time after which both of them sat in front of her laptop and checked for the details on the Great advisor's activities. Nothing seemed to be in action, except a few projects to increase the revenue from the richer landlords. That was good. Monique said softly, "He isn't a complete waste after all," she breathed in a deep sigh as the screen changed and an auditorium came into view. Many people in medieval attires seemed to be rushing about. Seeing Evan's confused look she explained, "They are all preparing for the dress rehearsals which will take place today evening." Evan nodded as he looked on. People used this in street plays on Doran. Monique shut the laptop and said, "Would you like to know something about our Queen?" Evan said the excitement in his eyes twinkling, "Tell me everything about her!" Monique gave a very wicked smile and fished out a heavy file from a drawer. It was a silk cloth which held crimson lettering and a beautiful seal - the seal of Baeyan. He cocked his head towards her and raised an eyebrow, to which she replied, "It's your job to find out what our queen is like? What all she needs to learn for being a Queen? Last but certainly not the least; you have to protect her from those vampires who refuse to go back to Baeyan." Evan opened his mouth to say something but closed it again as he couldn't find words to say anything. Monique's gloominess had completely disappeared and she said cheerfully, "You just have to sign this file and then we can finally have a suitable bodyguard for her Highness!" Evan stood frozen for a minute or two before saying, "take it from my point, is it really alright for a rebellious person like me to play second fiddle to a Queen?" Monique held out a blade and a fountain pen and said, "Of course it is, what could be a better match than an inexperienced queen and a spoiled prince? It'll do you both good." Evan searched for a pen on the table when she asked him, "What are you searching for?" He replied annoyed at seeing no pen on a study table, "I need a pen don't I, to actually sign on that silk?" Monique held out the blade and said, "You won't need one! We sign legal papers and contract papers with our blood; to signify the purity of the contract...." Exasperated at the strange laws of Baeyan he held out his wrist. Monique made a small cut as he drew the blood into the fountain pen. "Don't worry, the pen releases coagulants and anesthetics so you won't have a problem", said Monique. Evan shrugged and signed, the blood did not blot neither did it appear on the other side. Shaking his head, he stood up. Monique asked him meekly, "You'll do the job well, won't you?" He smirked and said, "Let's see if I have any luck with this lady.... If I do, it's her life before mine." Monique was more than convinced, knowing him, he walked his talk.
Yelling from the kitchen Evan asked, "What is the name of your Queen?" Monique yelled back, "Rihette Bridge!"
