Scarlet Diamond-1 (Arrival)

Arrival - it's about the arrival of Prince Evan Doran on Earth. He had been called by an old friend for some important work. But will he adjust with all that his new and then let go of the past which he left behind for good? PLEASE COMMENT! :)
1. ARRIVAL

The night seemed longer than usual. The candle light flickered as Monique lifted her head from her painting to look outside. She had been waiting for a particular inter - galactic friend. He was supposed to have arrived a week ago. News came in the next day that he had trouble escaping from his home town, Doran. It must have been the Great Advisor; he always created problems for those acting suspiciously. Last evening Evan himself had transmitted a message that he would be landing near her house. Lost in her art works, Monique continued painting the lush green grass. Her heart was floating, painting was her passion. It had been ever since she had discovered Sophie. She was a lovely little vampire with a great voice. She encouraged her elder sister to paint and drive away her boredom. Monique had not been able to go to her home planet for many years. She was the vampire who handled the affairs of vampires on Earth. It was a pain to send the wrong doers back to Baeyan. Politics!

Monique continued her work when she heard a deafening roar from outside. She was sure it was a space traveler. The hissing that followed left no doubt in her mind. She checked on Sophie who slept on peacefully in her shielded room. Monique covered her work with a large piece of paper before heading off to the back door. Sure enough! There it was her friend's "Spacer". Monique walked cautiously towards the craft. It was absolutely round and equally dusty. Since the door did not open on its own, Monique drew out her gun and hid it behind her back. She kicked the door in one go as it crashed inwards. Someone was strapped to the chair. She walked cautiously towards the driver and said with authority in her voice, "Report your identity, NOW!" As she walked further towards the seat, the person mocked looking at her shocked expression, "Prince Evan Doran reporting. Self - exiled, bound to Earth, as commanded by second - in - charge Monique Viezza... satisfied?" Monique dropped her gun and with tears in her eyes, hugged a very tired Evan. Still hugging him she said, "I... I never thought you would come all alone. You're hurt, here...." She offered her hand and supported his well built frame as they both reached the back door of her house. Monique quietly shut Sophie's door and went on to tend Evan. After an hour Evan sat with both his knees bandaged up a few band aids here and there. Luckily his head was in a single piece. Monique rolled the dinner inside on a trolley as Evan's eyes lighted up at the sight of delicious food. Soon after dinner they sat and talked late into the night. She had been his nanny when he was five. When they came to know she didn't age because she was a vampire she returned jobless to Earth once again. Evan interrupted her thoughts and spoke politely, "So, how've you been? All these years?" Monique smiled softly, the lines on her forehead easing, "It's been ages since I saw you. I saved a little vampire; she was motherless when I found her so I decided to keep her as my younger sister..." Evan gave a sympathetic smile and supplemented with his mouth full, "That loneliness is still there in your eyes, isn't it?" She brushed away a tear and replied, "Yeah! Our dear Prince has started to understand people's sentiments... finally!" "That's unfair, I was always sensitive to emotions, especially yours..." Monique said in a voice layered with sarcasm, "Ah! I wonder who called me a creep when the Great Advisor declared in public that I was a vampire!" He blushed and said apologetically, "Princess Leona made me understand that being a vampire was not creepy and that they are the same as everyone else. She is very sweet...." Monique smiled as young Leona's face swam in front of her eyes. She said after some time, "And how is everyone on Doran? What about Eric?" Evan grinned in spite of a throbbing pain that had started in his temples, "Brother? Well, both of us are going to miss the marriage of the year!" Monique's expression changed to worry as she asked him, "Don't tell me he's going to..." Evan cut her short and said with pride, "Prince Eric Doran and Princess Leona are getting married in a matter of a few months!" Relief flooded her as she digested the fact happily. The two talked about old times and what had been on Doran after she left. Happy and free on Earth, Evan finally went to sleep.

The next day was a bright day. Sophie was up early in the morning and had started screaming when she saw Evan on the couch watching the television. Monique had a horrid time explaining her about Evan's arrival. After she had gone to college, Monique made breakfast for both of them. Evan asked her meekly, "Basically, why did you call me to your house?" Monique stopped in her tracks and said with her back towards him, "There is a certain person I want you to take care of...." Evan shrugged uneasily, he had never taken any responsibility and now he was to look after someone! Soon, they were sitting near the pool and talking seriously.

Monique said firmly, "Listen Evan, I don't want you leaving Earth for the next few years..." Evan interrupted her coldly, too coldly than he would have wanted, "No one controls where I go or what I do, I'm a free Doranian." Monique recalled his stubbornness and said with a deep breath, "I'm not ordering you around. If you agreed to come to me as a means of escape, you should at least listen to what I'm saying!" Evan grunted as Monique continued, "You've to be a body guard for our Queen..."

"You don't mean that old hag, do you?" Evan said referring to Baeyan's queen, the one Monique had told him about some years back. She said in exasperated tones, "No, the queen shall be ending her reign next year and our new queen is now only seventeen years now. You have to meet her, get her to be accustomed to your presence, make her accept the fact that she is a vampire and then finally persuade her parents to allow her to come back to the place where she belongs..." Evan listened, his coldness melted away when he heard what he was to do. He asked doubtfully, "Before persuading her parents, shouldn't she be ready to leave her house?" Monique said eagerly, "Baeyan is where she belongs. Any vampire, who lives on any other planet other than Baeyan gets attracted to it. Anyway, it is the final life source of all non - blood drinking vampires...." Evan's eyes widened as he asked, "What do you mean, non - blood drinking vampires? Don't you... drink...?" Monique smiled knowingly and said, "I am not on any major project right now, so I don't need it. I give Sophie my blood to drink as she is still aging. She wants to stop at 19 years, I stopped at 25 years." Evan gazed at the sky as he thought about the strange world of vampires. They were outcaste in the Doran Empire. Still, he found them better than some Doranians. Monique straightened the umbrella overhead and sat down, relaxed. Evan said his thoughts aloud, "I wonder how I'll do all that I'm supposed to do!" Monique answered his query after a thoughtful while, "Let me tell you all about the 'scarlet diamond'. Let's go inside, I'll give you a book, finish it by evening, we are going to meet the Queen, a bit informally, tonight." She winked and led him to her study. It was a huge place with a beautifully carved desk that held papers and pens. Evan seemingly impressed by the number of decorations inhaled the bookish smell and said, "May I ask you what are these?" She answered calmly, "My garage..." He said surprised, "Your what?" She turned as her dark red hair twirled, "My garage, I keep my 'spacer' in your words here. It's behind those shelves. The rest are books from all over the world. But I do have a few from the galaxy's most famous information stores too." She was certainly proud of her collection. Sophie was back from college and Monique had to leave. She thrust a book towards him and left the room. Evan looked at the thick book, it looked extremely used. The book's cover said - 'QUEENS AND LIVES OF BAEYAN'

Evan opened the first page, though it was in a language he could understand, he found himself curious at the way it was written. He heard Monique in the kitchen. Taking a deep breath, he went ahead to read the book, some excerpts from here and there.

Baeyan has had 900 queens in the past. Each queen reigns for a period of about 100 years. There are no details as to how our planet came into existence. The queens however are supposed to handle the basic life source of Baeyan - the Scarlet Diamond, with utmost priority. The political system of Baeyan remains more or less constant, unless the queen feels like making any alteration. There are two separate governments for the palace and the people. The king is elected a year or two after the queen comes to power. Qualifications to become king are given in the following chapters. The queen is responsible for the rearing up of Scarlet Diamonds.

Evan stared at the print and wondered what in the world (or even outside it) could it mean. He searched Monique in the emptiness of the house, she wasn't really there. He walked down the main gate to see her waving off Sophie to piano lessons. Shrugging, he returned to his position on the couch. was he supposed to miss his home planet or wait for yet another disappointment...

Monique returned and saw Evan dozing. Sighing she went inside, leaving Evan and his loneliness in the hall.
