Save Me - Chapter 1

Should I continue?
Sometimes all you have is the loneliness to keep you company. It's with you every day and every hour. It's the only thing that I have anymore. It's just me and the loneliness. It's as if the sun doesn't shine anymore and the world I live in is forever drenched in darkness. I sigh. I am a depressing person. Could you blame me though? I am currently trapped in a dark cell at the top of a tower and fed food animals wouldn't eat. I grimaced at the smell of the food coming from the tray on the table near the door. Disgusting with a capital D. The moonlight seemed to find its way through the cracks in the stone walls and I got off my bed and walked over to it. This was sadly the only thing I looked forward to in the day. I sat down on the cold stone floor and passed my hand through the wispy fragment of light. My heart clenched as a memory of my foster-mother came to mind.

"Why are you still out here child? It's chilly and you're wearing but a thin dress." Velma came over to where I was standing shivering gazing up at the moon with a distant look in my eyes.

"I'm just looking at the moon. It's quite beautiful, is it not?" I had begun to shiver more violently as the wind blew and Velma asked and left to fetch a blanket.

"Here child." She set the blanket on my shoulders and I kissed her hand with affection. "Do you want to hear a story about the moon?"

I could remember barely nodding my head, as I walked over and sat on one of the two old rocking chairs.

"Once there was a man and a woman. They were from different worlds, but fell in love by a chance encounter at a time when both of their worlds collided. When the day ended they were forced apart as the rift between their worlds closed. The girl who awoke during the night in her world mourned the loss of the man and the man who awoke in the morning that lived during the day became ravaged with the need to see the woman again." She paused and took a deep breath.

"One day, a few years later the rift opened and the woman and man met again and rejoiced as they knew they only had a small amount of time together. The man begged the woman to come back with him to his world and the girl agreed, but told him she was not like he was and could only awake during the night. He said he didn't care and she followed him into his world as the rift closed once again.

She paused as I began to sniffle. "Do you not like the story?"

"It's not that. Please keep going." I looked at her with glaze as I was in total awe at her story.

She smirked and began to speak again. "Ok, where was I again?" She thought for a minute then clicked her fingers as she remembered. "They went through the rift together and in the man's world it was night. The girl said she would have to become part of something of the night if she were to survive. The man gestured to the moon and the woman fell in love once again. She kissed the man and rose up and into the moon becoming part of it and illuminating the night with her own glow. The man would come and see her every night and she would come down from the moon to be with him. Until one day the man ceased coming at all and the woman was left alone in the meadow they always met at. She came down every night at the same time and place until one night she finally gave up and stayed on the moon. She stills looks for him it's said, but then again it's just an old story my mother's mother told us."

Velma clapped her hands together and stood up. "Now let's get you inside child."

The dream evaporated into a mist and I sighed and returned to my bed wishing again that I could find a way to escape this place.
