Saucepans Over Stockpots
There is a difference between stockpots and saucepans. Though stockpots are usually wider and larger, a stockpot is designed to do just that: make stock. A saucepan does have the capability to make stock, but the purpose is to make sauce. The saucepan is a great way to not only make sauces, but also to make stews. Stews are different than stocks so saucepans are an adequate pan to cook them in. Saucepans also have lids to help accelerate the cooking process.
Another aspect that makes saucepans different from stockpots is that saucepans come with handles which help drain things much easier than with a stockpot. If you were to boil pasta in a saucepan, it is much more convenient to drain the pasta by taking it off the burner with the handle. This is also safer.
Saucepans are about as diverse as you can get with pots and pans. A stockpot is design specifically for making stock while a saucepans can be used for many different reasons. They come in different sizes and shapes and it is wise to buy more than one so you can be as diverse in the kitchen as you want to be.
There won’t be many times where you will make stock. There will, however, be many times where you’ll make sauce, boil pasta or other starches, stir fry, or even bake. A saucepan is a great investment and one that shouldn’t be overlooked. They can also come in the forms of non-stick, Teflon, copper or other metals.
