Sandwiches

Sandwiches existed long before their presence was registered. The oldest record of this famous combination of bread and meat put together dates back in the year 100 BC, when Rabbi Hillel mixed matzo pieces with nuts and apple pieces in order to eat them with the bitter herbs during the Easter fasting time.

The first reference to the word "sandwich" was done in the year 1726 when a reporter published an article in Daily News. This article referred to John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. This Earl was a passionate card player who would spend hours on end at the card playing table and the only things he used to ask for were spirits, water, bread, slices of cheese and meat. And because he needed one hand to play cards and so it was difficult for him to eat and play at the same time, he put the meat and cheese between the two slices of bread. The other players noticed the Earl's new invention and asked for the same type of meal as his.

In 1827 appeared a popular cooking book by Miss Leslie where she published a sandwich recipe with bacon and introduced this recipe as official, in the category of essential meals. This led to the adoption of the sandwich all over the USA. In 1900 bakeries started to sell loafs of uncut, soft white bread.

Starting with the '20s, parents began using sandwiches for children's food packages, the most popular sandwich filling being bacon and eggs. The first white sliced bread was sold in the year of 1930 by Wonder Bread. Of course, the most favorite sandwich in America is that of peanut butter and jelly, created by soldiers fighting in World War II. They have combined bread, peanut butter and jelly out of their ratios. This type of filling spread all across the US army and the idea was even transmitted to their families at home.

Another famous sandwich was Elvis Presley's favorite. It consisted of peanut butter and slices of bananas. Today, there are many types of bread which are used for sandwiches, such as brown bread, graham, rye bread, and so on. There are also bread derived products such as tortillas, focaccias, matzo, and many others. It seems that each culture has its own version of a sandwich and it is ideal for using the remains of a meal for food during travels.

In December 2007, the American company called Tesco put on the market their very first musical sandwich. When the packing was opened, before enjoying the delicious sandwich, the sandwich buyer would enjoy some Christmas carols. The technology employed was the same as the one used for musical cards.

The research was led by Chicago experts and was performed on 3000 persons. The participants were questioned about their favorite type of sandwiches and were submitted to some tests in order to find out the essential aspects of their personalities.

Thus, those who prefer turkey sandwiches enjoy being free of constraints both in their personal and professional lives. Such persons could be called creative and rebellious.
