Temple Square
It is the most important part of the city, with great historical background and it is the sacred place for the Mormons. Temple Square, houses many important places including the Beehive House, which was the residency of the Mormon leader Brigham Young. The turret of the house has a big beehive that supposedly represents the diligence of the Mormons. It is the same beehive that appears on the coat of arms of the Utah state. The Victorian Gothic architecture of the Assembly Hall is enrapturing. It is a concert hall and the main center for the many recreational activities that take place here at weekends. The Eagle Gate, the Family History Library, the Duel Log Home, the church office building, etc. are all situated here.
Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill is located in the northeast region of the Temple Square. It is a prime center of the many attractions of Salt Lake City. The Marmalade Historic District is located here. It still has the houses and the architecture of the people who discovered Salt Lake City. The Council Hall, which was the first state capital is also situated here. Now, it hosts the Utah state information and travel center. The State Capitol is located at the end of the extreme north of the State Street and is a domed building with neo-classical architecture and beautiful marble interiors. It is an important building of the state, as it hosts the Supreme Court, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
University of Utah
The Utah University was founded in the year 1850. The Museum of National History and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts are situated on the campus of the University. In both the museums you can view specimens of fine art, from ancient to the modern art, like the African and the Egyptian art, furniture and paintings. The Red Butte Garden and Arboretum is also located here. It's spread across 100 acres of land, with lots of exiting activities like hiking trails and natural paths. It is the largest botanical garden and ecological center in the Intermountain West region.
Jordan River State Park
Located on the river Jordan, that flows through the Salt Lake City, it is a haven for those seeking some activity. Those of you who are interested in biking, golf, watercraft activities, sailing and such... this place is a must visit for you. The Ranging Waters, a 17 acres water amusement park, is situated here. Also, the Pioneer Municipal Park and the International Peace Garden are located here, providing you with a wide range of exciting activities as well as an ample amount of sightseeing.
Great Salt Lake
The city was named after this largest Salt Lake in the western hemisphere. The lake is still a geological mystery for scientists. The average area of the Great Salt Lake is around 17,000 square miles. It is separated from the city by a few fenlands and mudflats. Its salinity is much more than sea water. It is called as the 'dead sea of America', though it is a home for thousands of native birds, waterfowl and shorebirds. It has the largest population of the Wilson's Phalarope all over the world. The lake is the main tourist attraction because of its beautiful jade and bright blue surface area. It also attracts artists and water sports enthusiasts. The Antelope Island National Park is located near the lake and it shelters many wild animals like bison and bighorn sheep. There are several places on the shore of the great Salt Lake, where you can enjoy sunbathing.
