Sail the Seven Seas as a Pirate

The pirate costume is always a favorite. The costume is great for both men and women. Learn what is needed to make the pirate costume a success.
A truly classic Halloween Costume, The Pirate is gender defying and not to mention truly versatile. The popularity of the Pirate costume, especially women’s pirate costumes, increased even more after the release of the blockbuster hit "Pirates of the Caribbean" where British actress Keira Knightley was shown wearing a female version of the pirate costume. Not only is the women’s pirate costume empowering, as it represents a strong female, it is also very sexy.

Going from traditional styles to the sexier ones, the variety of pirate costumes for both men and women is just amazingly extensive. What’s even more fun is the wide variety of props that go along with the costumes. There are fake teeth, eye patches, hand hooks and swords all available to amp up a person’s pirate appeal. But perhaps the most important accessory of all, as popularized by Capt. Jack Sparrow himself, is the hat.

Turn yourself into a pirate and break free from the mundane and you will surely have a very memorable Halloween. Part of being a pirate is their devil may care attitude which without it you’re simply just another guy in a "Jack Sparrow" costume. Women’s pirate costumes are also very versatile as you can opt to wear a skirt or pants, giving more freedom when it comes to choosing. A pirate costume is also especially good for the more conservative types of females.

Pirate costumes are not at all difficult to recreate and they don’t have to be very expensive. Pirates were free spirits and they dressed accordingly. As there were not a set of rules with the way they lived, there is also no dress code and thus making them very inconsistent dressers. A common thing however is the fact that they dressed in very loose fitting, often times raggedy, disproportionate clothing. You can match your pirate costume with some boots, some tacky jewelry, an eye patch and perhaps a toy parrot and you’re good to go.

For those looking for some tips, here are some ideas for you:

Pirate Costume for Men:
  • Get yourself an oversized, tri-corner hat, reminiscent of Jack Sparrow. Wear it with a scarf or a sash which should be tied around your head. Or you could just wear the scarf if you can’t find a hat.
  • Find yourself a nice long sleeved shirt which has laces ups around the neck. The more ruffled the better.
  • Now get yourself what I like to refer to as a "hippie" belt, a wide one with some stones or some kind of embellishment on it. Tie it around your waist.
  • Finish the costume off with a pair of worn-in leather boots. The more worn the better. Remember pirates are no dandy’s.
Pirate Costume for Women:
  • Same as with the men, find yourself some ruffled blouses and boots, preferably ones that lace up.
  • Get yourself a corset and wear it over your shirt. Fabric corsets are fine but leather always works the best.
  • Next, find yourself a nice and flowy gypsy skirt with an asymmetrical hem line. If you can’t find one, get yourself a flouncy skirt with some leather overlays. Remember that you can also opt for pants and tuck them into your boots.
  • Finish the look with a lacy scarf for your neck or a simple leather choker.
Of course, for both men and women, you should never forget the pirate essentials - an eye patch, a parrot and a nice wine or rum!
