A recent study conducted in the Ohio State University suggests the effectiveness of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and safflower oil (SAF) in losing weight among obese postmenopausal women.

Safflower oil is a colorless and odorless cooking oil, derived from the seeds of safflower (scientific name Carthamus tinctorius). Being very sensitive to heat and light, the oil should be stored in a cool and dark place. In food preparation, this oil is preferably used in salad dressings. It is also used as a cooking oil. Other than the liquid oil, safflower oil supplements are formulated and sold in food stores.

Depending on the type of safflower from which the oil is derived, two different varieties of safflower oil are available in markets. For example, some contain high percentage of oleic acid (monounsaturated fatty acid), whereas others have linoleic acid (polyunsaturated fatty acid) in high amounts. The former variety is usually used for cooking and salad dressing, while the latter is used in paints. This edible oil contains less saturated fat than olive oil.

Safflower oil is rich in omega 6 fatty acids, vitamin E, vitamin K, and certain important phytosterols. Speaking about safflower oil benefits, it helps in shedding extra kilos, lowering blood cholesterol levels, and reducing blood sugar levels, when consumed in moderation. Regular use of safflower oil ensures healthy skin and hair.

Safflower Oil and Weight Loss

Most of us think that intake of fatty oils increases the risk of becoming overweight or obese. However, it is to be borne in mind that polyunsaturated fats such as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are beneficial to the body in several ways. Also known as good fats, the unsaturated fatty acids present in safflower oil reduce the risk of heart diseases by lowering blood cholesterol levels. Heart disease is fairly common among obese people.

In general, safflower oil has shown to enhance bodily metabolic activities. As the oil promotes burning of fat, it helps prevent accumulation of fat in the body. Once ingested, the oil stimulates the secretion of the hormone 'adiponectin.' Levels of the hormone adiponectin are inversely correlated with body fat percentage in adults. An increased adiponectin level accelerates the process of fat burning. These weight loss effects are observed irrespective of any changes in the regular diet and exercise program. However, to attain the goal of desired weight loss, you should increase your physical activity, and should follow a balanced diet.

An Ohio State University study found that safflower oil helped obese postmenopausal women to lose accumulated fats from the torso portion of the body (to about 6.3 percent). The speed of losing fat remained uniform, which is rarely observed with other weight loss remedies.

As per the proponents of safflower oil supplements, the supplements are safe for all, and pose no side effects in the long run. Nevertheless, if you are planning to use this vegetable oil or supplements with an aim of losing weight, make sure you take your doctor's approval before actually adding it in the diet plan.
