There are many self-proclaimed safe energy drinks that can have hazardous effects on your health. This analytical article shares some useful insights on energy drinks that can help you decide if you really need one.

What is an Energy Drink?
First, we must be aware of some basic facts about energy drinks. Some experts define energy drinks as drinks that help the person increase stamina and improve the physical performance. Essentially, these beverages are designed for elite athletes who often feel the need to feel energized while and before performing on the sports ground. Their energy levels tend to go down due to strenuous physical activity and at such times an energy drink can provide them with quick energy boost.
Energy drinks are high on sugars, carbohydrates, caffeine, different types of acids, herbs containing caffeine such as, guarana seeds and kola nuts, etc. These ingredients in these beverages act like a stimulant and provide the person with quick energy. So such drinks could be useful for the sportsmen with hectic physical activity but that too in the moderate amount. But, excessive and unnecessary consumption of such drinks can have serious and fatal effects on the body.
Why Energy Drinks Could Be Harmful?
If you have gone through the ingredients carefully, you would have guessed the side effects of energy drinks by now. A drink loaded with excessive sugars and stimulants can instantly make you believe that you are feeling energized. It happens because of the sugars and stimulants present in the drink which work for some time, say an hour or so, and then again you feel the need to 'energize' yourself when the energy levels drops suddenly causing sluggishness. The quick energy diminishes also very quickly when the caffeine and sugar leaves the bloodstreams making you feel suddenly very tired and lethargic. This is how energy drinks work giving you a kind of 'high' for sometime by increasing the blood pressure and brain alertness. But excessive intake of such drinks can lead to high blood pressure problems, increased heart rate, dizziness, and palpitations, etc. the symptoms of overdose of such drinks include, nervousness, insomnia, heart palpitation, tremors, chest pain, neurological problems, nausea, diarrhea, and excessive sweating, etc.
Energy drinks are also very useless when it comes quenching the thirst because they dehydrate the body even more by reducing its ability to absorb water and by pressurizing the muscles to work harder. Many research studies have been conducted to study the effects of energy drinks on underlying health problems. According to the findings of these studies, consuming these beverages excessive can increase your risk for heart problems, depression, disturbed sleeping patterns, diabetes, premature aging, and damage to nervous system, etc. Some people also mix it with alcohol which can have fatal effects on an individual. There have been many cases where people who mixed and over consumed it, died within couple of hours after that. Another biggest disadvantage of such beverages is that people can easily get addicted to them just like alcohol or smoking and then it becomes quite challenging to rehabilitate. Person who tries to quit drinking them also experiences withdrawal symptoms, such as, depression, headaches, inability to concentrate, and chronic fatigue, etc. which makes quitting even more challenging.
Hence, it is essential to avoid consuming such drinks. Looking at the side effects, kids, pregnant women, alcoholics, smokers, and people suffering from any kind of health ailments, should strictly avoid them. Even the active sportsmen are also advised to stay away from them. Instead, they can go for fresh fruit juices which can provide them with required energy.
Remember that your body needs good quality glucose and carbohydrate to digest and provide you with energy, which these quick energy drinks do not contain at all. It is certainly not smart to risk your health and fitness for an artificial energy that would drop in few minutes. So instead of risking your life by going for such quick short cuts, inculcate some healthy habits that would help you stay fit and energized in the real sense of the term. A well-balanced diet and healthy lifestyle would take you a long way and would improve your performance in everything you do.
