Life is Beautiful
One of the saddest movies of all time, Life is Beautiful, recounts the story of Guido Orifice, a Jewish Italian. Guido is a charismatic young man who arrives in Arezzo, Italy and soon falls in love with an aristocratic young girl. He gets married to her and has a son Giosue. During the Second World War, Guido and Giosue are taken by the Nazis to the concentration camps, where he is joined by his wife. To keep up Giouse's spirit, Guido convinces the little boy that they are actually in a game and to win the game they have to collect 1000 points. Despite the grimness of the concentration camp and the horrors and death seen there, Guido manages to keep his son entranced in his tale. This story about the attempts of a father to keep his son away from the ugliness of the war is truly moving. It has received many awards and accolades.

Steel Magnolias
Steel Magnolias is considered to be one of the best movies of all time. Directed by Robert Harling, it is a screen adaptation of a 1987 Broadway play. The movie is based on the author's own experience with the death of his sister. It shows the bond between a group of women. In the center, there is Shelby a young girl who is married to Jackson. Her decision to have a child in spite of suffering from diabetes changes their lives and brings in many complications. There are many subplots in this movie although the main story is about Shelby trying to cope with her medical condition. Excellent acting by the cast and the complexity of relations and emotions shown in the movie, makes it one of the saddest movies.

Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan starring Tom Hanks is also a good sensitive and emotional movie. This epic war movie revolves around the Second World War and the Normandy invasion. Captain John H. Miller, superbly portrayed by Tom Hanks, along with his men is given the mission of finding Private First Class James Francis Ryan. His three brothers have already died in the war and he was to be located and immediately sent back home. The movie is about finding Ryan in the midst of war and safely sending him back home. Captain Miller loses most of his men in trying to find Ryan but is successful in the end. He gives up his own life in the line of duty. The movie is one of the top 10 saddest movies and also the best war movies to be made.

When a Man Loves a Woman
This movie revolves around a young married couple Alice Green and Michael Green portrayed by Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia. Michael is an airline pilot who has a hard time coming to terms with his wife's alcoholism and subsequent reckless behavior. When Alice realizes how her alcoholism threatens her and her family's wellbeing and safety, she enters a rehab center. When she kicks her addiction, Michael who is pleasant albeit controlling, has a hard time adjusting. The way the movie focuses on how alcoholism affects a marriage and the drinker's partner is quite heart wrenching.
