Sad Poetry and Its Values

Many different people or varying ages write sad poetry for its therapeutic values. But what does it really do to the brain and the proverbial soul?
I've been composing poetry since I was a teen. That's around 20 years now. Most of which has been dark and depressing. Am I a clinical depressive? Not as far as modern science is concerned.

Why is dark poetry such a pervasive presence in our society and why do so many people seek it out?

Psychologically it can be helpful to experience the sensation that someone else is going through a similar problem. Humans are in general a social animal. Feeling alone is often the worst thing that can befall them.

Poetry and its myriad of permutations can address all sorts of problems in an individual.

Who should write poetry? Anyone who wishes to do so. Poetry needn't be about whether it's good or bad. It can simply be an expression of emotion not subject to caustic judgments.

While every poet isn't as Shakespearean as they might perceive themselves to be still the act of release has its wisdom and healing to impart.

When reading others poetry one should always remember that emotions are easily and often inadvertently transferred. Any grief you may feel can be amplified by the grief of others.

Poetry can be a powerful source of healing and inspiration, especially for those struggling with mental anguish. But it is important to remember that the poetry of others is their own and that it cannot fix your problems or cure the things that ail you.

Your own poetry may serve as a sufficient outlet for your frustrations. But don't rely on it. While self expression is a healthy and valid form of coping, every person and each individual problem has its own specific remedy.

Sometimes words just aren't enough.

If you've struggle with depression for any length of time seek professional help.
