An alcohol that is made from the by-products of sugarcane like molasses and the juice of sugarcane by fermentation and distillation, rum in its first stage is a clear liquid, which acquires its color after it is aged in barrels. The majority of the top brands in the world belong to the Caribbean countries and countries from Central and South America.

Types
If you are not a rum connoisseur, then it is understandable if you get confused by the sheer number of varieties that are available in the market. From the brands in countries like Jamaica to those in India, different grades of rum are manufactured in different countries. The variation is generally an indication of the location at which the product was made.

Light Rum: If you like rum mixed drinks, then chances are that the variety that you generally use is light rum. It has a very slight flavor and is generally sweet. Most manufacturers use a filtration process after aging in order to dispel any color. Most brands of this variety are from the nation of Puerto Rico.

Gold Rum: Their dark color is generally obtained from the wooden barrels in which they are aged. They are stronger than light rum and generally have more flavor. They are also known as amber rum.

Dark Rum: Manufactured primarily in Nicaragua and Guatemala, this variety is a grade stronger and darker than gold rum. It is aged in heavily charred barrels that contributes to its color. In most drinks, dark rum is used to add substance and color. It is also very commonly used for cooking purposes.

Spiced Rum: The flavor is obtained from different spices that are added to the liquor as it is aged. They are much darker than Gold rum. Many cheap brands use caramel color to darken white rum. The spices that are commonly used in this beverage include aniseed, pepper, rosemary, and cinnamon.

Other than these main types, you can also get flavored rum, which is rum mixed with different flavors, overproof rum, which is one with a higher alcohol content, and premium in the market. While making these drinks you need to be sure of the variety that you are using.
