While often pooh-poohed by wine connoisseurs the rose wine is a well loved beverage among its fans. It, as most people may not know isn't made from roses. This name is actually derived from Rosé which in French language stands for pinkish. Rose wines are a type of red wine, but are not exactly 'red' in color. They are a different type of wine which have a pinkish tinge. While you may also find them in orange and purple, the original rose wine was supposed to be pinkish and hence the name is given. In some countries Rose wines are also known as blush wines as their color resembles the color of a blush. Rosé wines are popular among those who like their wines a bit sweeter and albeit made from red grapes, their method of production is slightly different.

How many calories in a glass of wine? Well, the exact figures may vary from wine to wine, but on an average, a glass of rose wine will add about 73 calories to your daily intake. On the other hand, calories in a bottled rose wine are 500. That means if you have a full bottle, you will consume 500 calories.

Nutritional Facts

It is perhaps one of the least nutritive products available. It contains very little proteins. The protein count in a glass of red wine is estimated to be around 0.2 g. It also contains very few carbohydrates and while the exact number of carbohydrates in rose wine might differ in different types of wines, the average number of carbohydrates in a glass are estimated to be about 1.4 g. There are almost no saturated fats and indeed no fats at all to speak of, which makes the wine sound like a very healthy product indeed. Traces of iron and calcium may be found though.

So if it has no sugar, no fats and little carbohydrates, where are all the rose calories coming from? Most of the calories are from alcohol.

It is said that some of the first rose wines were prepared by adding a bit of red wine to white wines. But now the method of wine making is a little different, in comparison to what it was before. The grapes are first crushed very early on. Which means that they are unable to give their red color to the wine, which comes from the coloring agent in red wines, tannin. Hence rose wine doesn't have the traditional red color associated with wine. They are also a lot sweeter then red wines. They are known popularly as summertime wines as they have a slightly cooling effect on the person consuming the wine.

Rose wine may have quite a few calories per glass, but surely you can give yourself the luxury of this nice drink once in a while.
