A negotiating team is a very important component of any organization. A good negotiating team has members with diverse skills. A team leader can be the chief negotiator, but in some circumstances, such as when the team leader is not a good negotiator, it proves to be advantageous to have two separate people as team leader and chief negotiator. The chief negotiator has to be articulate, a good team player and posses good presence of mind. It's very important that the entire team has some past experience in negotiation, but other than that, all the members in the team should posses at least one of the following qualities:
  • Technical Knowledge
  • Relationship Skills
  • Patience
  • Observational Skills
  • Behavior Analyzing Skills
Having people with these qualities is advantageous during the process of negotiation. Depending on their negotiation skills the members should be assigned essential roles in negotiation process. It is very important that all the members understand the roles and responsibilities of negotiation team.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Negotiation Team
Unity within the team is the most important attribute of the negotiation team. Prior to entering into a negotiation, the team should understand the subject and come to an agreement on the basic negotiation substance. Decide which information you are going to reveal during the negotiation, and which information should never be revealed in the process. Cracks within the team will give an advantage to the other side, and hence are best avoided. Being well prepared is like half the battle won. Plan your negotiation, and more importantly be prepared with full range of knowledge and expertise. Teamwork is another important attribute of a successful negotiation team. The team should agree over issues such as best alternative to a negotiated agreement, reservation point, best possible outcome or the worst case scenario.

One of the important aspects of several negotiation techniques, is knowing the other side very well. Collect as much information about the other side as possible. List out the issues which you think will prioritize or the points on which you can corner them. If you are not able to find some or the other vital information, make a list of them. May be you can get this information at the last minute, or make the other side talk-it-out during the negotiation talks. Breaks in between a negotiation are vital, as they can give you an opportunity to do a reality check. Here the team leader can discuss with other team members, such as behavior analysts, and take their feedback. It can also be an apt way to solve internal disputes, if any.

In some cases the roles and responsibilities of negotiation team ends when the deal is finalized, while in some cases the team may have to follow up for related deals in future. In case you are sure that there would be no meetings henceforth, you can take a hard stance during the negotiation process. But if you want to be in good terms with the opposite side for future collaborations, then it's wiser to take a relatively soft stance. May it be for salary negotiation or a million dollar deal negotiation, good negotiation skills are bound to help every individual at some point of time in life.
