Robert Pattinson May be Set to Play Jeff Buckley
Robert Pattinson may land the role as Jeff Buckley in an upcoming film project, but he’ll have to beat out James Franco, or perhaps others, to win the part.
Perhaps in the same way that "Titanic" truly launched Leonardo DiCaprio to superstardom – at least in the minds of 13-year-old girls - Robert Pattinson seems to have vaulted into tween-fueled stardom via his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series. Now, word has it that Pattinson may be in line to play Jeff Buckley in an upcoming film about the deceased musician. Were he to land the role, the young girls that will go to see it will likely have to ask "who is Jeff Buckley?" – he died in 1997 when the current batch of swooning teens and teens-to-be were merely babies – but really, they won’t be going for the quality of the film anyway.
Pattinson is apparently not the only actor who is being considered for the role. James Franco – both a better actor and closer in appearance to Buckley – is also under consideration Buckley himself, a singer-songwriter who was, in turn, the son of singer-songwriter Tim Buckley, is best known for his version of the song "Hallelujah." He died of drowning in 1997 at the age of 30.
Mary Guibert, Buckley’s mother, will help oversee the film project and has already demanded that the actor who will play her son must actually sing and play the guitar. Said Guibert, "Whoever gets the part will need a lot of self-discipline because they won’t be able to fake it. It’s going to take a phenomenal set of skills." It is also rumored that Jared Leto and James Marsden are being considering for the role, though it appears that Franco and Pattinson have the edge at this point.
