Right-handed Vs Left-handed

Does it amaze you to see people writing with their left hand? Not only writing, but then executing a variety of tasks. I get amazed. And more often I wish if I were left-handed, so that even I could do things differently. It amazes me because if we look around, the majority of people are right-handed, so seeing someone using a different hand is fun. In a true sense, one doesn't need to be left-handed to do things differently. In fact, it doesn't matter whether you're right or left-handed. What must matter is the how you perceive things and how far you can think.

Statistically, one out of every ten people is left-handed. Which means that approximately 9-10% of people in the world are lefties. There are 3% more chances for left-handedness to occur in males as compared to females. But then what makes some people left-handed? If scientific theories are to be believed, they have got an answer to this question.

What happens in a person who is right-handed is that the left side of the brain, known as the left hemisphere, is dominant. This in turn means that most of the activities are controlled by the left hand side of the brain. This side of the brain is used to analyze things logically and tries to solve them. It is more structured and organized and also responds to verbal responses. On the other hand, in people who are left-handed, the right side of the brain is dominant. This means that this group or people are highly creative and they search for fun activities. They are extrovert and have the ability to get a good fan following. They are mostly considered as geniuses. The myths and facts about left-handed people are endless.

Reasons Determining Right-handedness or Left-handedness

Most of the time heredity may be the reason which determines it. But then it cannot be the sole reason why this happens. Genetics can be another reason determining the same. According to research done on this subject it was found out that complexities at the time of birth is one of the reasons why this happens. During complex or stressful births, the baby is exposed to high levels of testosterone. Testosterone is harmful for the growth of the left hemisphere of the brain and can lead to underdevelopment of it. Which means that the right hemisphere of the brain will be dominant and the child will have a higher chance of being left-handed.

Considering that almost 90-95% of the people are right-handed, it seems natural that most of the things made today are made with such people in mind. If you take a look around, you will find that there are umpteen things designed for right-handed use. This does not mean that left-handed people cannot use these objects. For example, take a pair of scissors, even though it is made for right-handed people, lefties can use it efficiently as well. Similarly, a few other objects like refrigerators, guitars, microwaves, etc., are made for right-handed people but are used comfortably by left-handed people. There are, however, a few companies which do manufactures objects designed for left-handed people, as there are some objects that necessarily need to be made for left-handed people, but these are few and far in between. At the end of the day, it does not really matter if you use your left hand or your right hand, what matters is your spirit and the willingness to learn and adapt.

The advantage of being right-handed is that you have everything as per your convenience. As compared to left-handed people, you do not have to struggle with objects made just for left-handed people. But then this doctrine has been diminished by the modern times of today. On the other hand, left-handed people have aesthetic qualities. They are comparatively quick and are considered to be sheer geniuses. The list of famous lefties is huge. There are many left-handed presidents, including President George H.W.
