Right Flank Pain

If you are experiencing right flank pain it may be a cause for worry, especially if you are a woman. There can be various underlying causes for right flank pain, and before you jump to any conclusions, it is important that you pay attention to the pain symptoms...
The area between the last rib and the hip is known as the flank and the outer skin on this region is quite tender. If you have other symptoms along with the pain, like fever, or frequent urination, then it is a good idea to see a physician and undergo a few tests. Some of the tests that you might have to undergo include a CT-scan, ultrasound, and an X-ray. In most cases, if this pain is because of a serious medical condition, it will be accompanied by other symptoms. Some urinary tract infections may also cause this pain that is intermittent and at times can be painful.

To devise a correct treatment plan, the causes need to be determined with the help of symptoms and some medical tests. Most people try over-the-counter medicines when they experience pain, and though this might work for some, for others a visit to the doctor is necessary. Some of the causes of right flank pain are:

Kidney Disorders
One of the reasons for flank pain is kidney stones, these stones block the ureter and you will experience pain in your flank region. The kidney makes urine and helps the body rid itself of waste products. The urine flows through the kidney into the bladder through the ureter and when there is a blockage in this flow, pressure builds up in the kidney causing pain. Pyelonephritis, a bacterial infection which causes inflammation in the kidneys, is another cause of this pain.

Gynecological Problems
Right flank pain during pregnancy can be caused due to an ectopic pregnancy. This is the most common reason for flank pain in women, and it can be easily diagnosed with a pelvic ultrasound. Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is found in the pelvic cavity, for example on the ovaries or the fallopian tubes. The most common symptom of endometriosis is pelvic and flank pain. Ovarian cysts are also sometimes responsible for flank pain in women.

Infections
Infections in the urinary tract may lead to flank pain, these urinary tract infections are mostly caused by germs. The germs that cause these infection travel from the intestines into the bladder through the urethra and cause a bladder infection. These bladder infections are easy to treat but may cause pain until they are treated. These infections are generally accompanied by nausea, fever and burning sensation while urinating.

Other Causes
People suffering from diabetes and arthritis may also experience pain in the right flank from time to time. An injury to the lower back section or a muscle pull may also lead to flank pain, and in such cases anti-inflammatory drugs can give relief.

Whatever the reason, it is always a good idea to consult a doctor before you start self medication. Consulting a urologist is also probably a good idea if you are experiencing right flank pain over a sustained period of time.
