Review of Select Comfort European White Goose Down Pillow
I discuss the features as well as the pros and cons of the Select Comfort European White Goose Down Pillow.
The Facts
The Sleep Number European White Goose Down Pillow cost between $120-$150 depending mainly on size and firmness. The down fill goes through a 15-step cleaning process that removes allergy-causing impurities.
The pillow comes in medium, soft and firm varieties, and each variety comes in standard or king size. There are also varieties for back, side and stomach sleepers. These pillows are 100 percent genuine down, and do not have feathers placed at the core. Care of the pillow calls for spot cleaning or gentle machine washing and drying.
The Review
The product has many unique construction features that make this pillow a step above other down pillows. The back sleeper variety is a three chambered design that will cradle and contour to one's neck and keep one's spine in proper alignment while one sleeps. The side sleeper variety is a gusseted design that fills the area between one's neck and shoulder. This succeeds in keeping one's neck inline during sleep. The stomach sleeper variety is a low density, relatively low loft pillow with elliptical side panels that provides a soft but supportive sleeping surface.
The pillows are soft and fluffy. In addition, the fill doesn't shift to one side or the other resulting in hollow spots as sometime happens with lower quality down pillows. Like all down pillows, you will have to fluff them on occasion to get air into the pillow and thus more loft and support. I find that when I change the pillowcase it takes me a couple of nights to readjust the pillow.
Support is not the strong feature of down because when you place your head on the product, the air tends to leave the down, and this results in your head sinking into the pillow. If you want good support, consider a down pillow with feathers at the core or a different type of pillow altogether.
In regard to value, one could probably find a pillow of similar capability and comfort for less. However, if a person gets several years of good use and sleep from a pillow, then it is likely a good investment. And on this issue, 100% down pillows tend to have good longevity and durability.
