Are you planning to upgrade your window to give a new look to your exterior as well as interior? But what if the wrong windows are installed or right windows are installed incorrectly or the whole structure including interior or the exterior is damaged during the home improvement process? It will be sheer wastage of money and energy. Isn't it? Renovating a house with retrofit windows instead of opting for reconstruction can prove to be cheaper. Upgrading the house with such windows can be more energy saving and will also provide the required insulation. Without wasting money on new window frame, you can easily fit in vinyl or aluminum windows. Even the installation process is quite simple, but before that let us see why these windows are preferred to new constructions.

Retrofit vs New Construction

For replacement of windows you have two options. Either you go for a new construction or get a retrofit. If you are planning for a new construction, then the windows will undergo complete replacement. The original window frame will be replaced by the new one and this will leave the interior and the exterior of your house in a very pathetic condition. If you plan to go ahead with the plan, then it will be cheaper than the new construction, will involve no damage and the process is even quicker. You can even go through the retrofit window reviews available online. Vinyl windows are the cheapest among all and they look beautiful. If you install replacement windows yourself, then the cost can be easily reduced by $40 to $150 approximately. Following is the approximate cost involved in the different replacement windows (each window) of an average size.
  • Vinyl windows - $150
  • Fiberglass window - $300
  • Aluminum windows - $200
  • Wood windows - $500
  • Composite windows - $750
Measure the Windows

Before installation, you need to measure the new window that is to be fit in. For this you need to open the window panel after removing the screen. With the help of a measuring tape measure the width of the window frame and measure the distance from the top to the bottom of the frame to get the height. While making the frame or ordering it, reduce 1/4" from the measured dimensions (height and width both) so that the new window fits in the old one properly. Once you have the frame ready, now you can start the installation process.

Install Retrofit Windows

Here are some common steps for retrofit window installation. Follow the simple procedure given below for installation.
  • Drill three holes of approximately 3/8 inches (diameter) on each sides of the windows and on the top as well.
  • Remove the old window panel and apply caulk, a waterproof filler for metals on the remaining aluminum frame of the window.
  • Now place your windows on the frame properly to the center so that it easily opens from the inside.
  • Properly plumb and level the window and check it once you have placed it by opening and closing the vent panel.
  • Now drill the desk screws in the already drilled holes so that they are properly inserted into the wooden panel.
  • Insert screw into the drainage holes by slowly lifting it upwards. To make the screw more secure, you can apply caulking around it. To protect the house from seepage or water leakage apply caulking in the gaps.
  • With the help of R-13 insulation, an insulating device, fill in the gaps.
The process will be even simpler if you are properly equipped and taken the accurate measurement of the window prior to installation. These windows will no doubt add style to your exterior and interior and will be cost-effective as well.
