Measurements are very important so before you start working on window installation, measure the opening inside the window frame. Avoid measuring the entire panel of the window. That is because the original frame is already there.

The next thing you need to do is to drill 3/8 inch holes across the top portion of the window and then 3 holes on every side. This was the preparation for installing retrofit windows. Follow that up by getting rid of the existing old window panels.

Well, now the next task is to run a thick bead of caulking. A thick bead of caulking has to be run on the aluminum frame, when it is still there. Once you are done with this, place the window in the frame.

From the inside, make sure that the retrofit window has been placed properly in the opening. It has to be level and to ensure all this, slide the vent panel open and close. You will get to know if there is a problem in leveling. In case the window is not fitting properly, between the sill and bottom of the window frame corner, you can place shims.

Taking it ahead from the earlier step, make sure there are enough shims to level the window. Follow that by drilling deck screws 3/8 inch holes made earlier. Avoid tightening the screws as yet, though they will go all the way in the wood. Remove the siding panel once the screws are in place. The bottom track has to be lifted out while installing replacement windows.

Lift up the drainage holes if any in the track. A screw will need to be inserted in the center bottom, succeeded by caulking around its head. Re install the siding panel after fixing the track back. If the need be caulk the portion where the lip meets the exterior of the house. Doing this will provide better protection from water.

Using an R 13 insulation, fill the gap on the inside of the window frame. The insulation has to be packed tight. As a finishing touch, a wood trim will be required to be installed around the frame. This is necessary to hide the insulation and the metal frame. A bead of caulking as a last bit where the trim meets the wall and you are done!

You have just accomplished a home upgrading task! If you get vinyl windows as replacements, then these same instructions apply for the installation of vinyl retrofit windows!

Caulking and insulation are two very important aspects in retrofit window installation. Thus do not forget that. Another thing is that these windows come with a lip or flush fin, acting as stopper fir holding the windows in place till they are tightened. In case of any doubt you can always refer to a manual! All the best!
