How to Restuff Couch Cushions
There are many reasons for why the cushion fillings in your sofa might turn to a lumpy mass. The most common being constant usage. Then there is the factor of spills on the couch and the like. All that is not important. What's important is that one needs to get the couch cushions back to a state of 'as good as new'.The easiest way to go about this is to replace the cushions with the original stuff. This is a great way to ensure that the quality of the couch is not compromised. Some companies offer replacement products that can be ordered and the restuffing done just as easily. To order replacements, you'll have to get in touch with the manufacturers and place an order. They might even send over workmen to help restuff the couch if there is that option available. But if that is not possible, then you'll have to manage restuffing the cushions on your own. Here's how you go about it:
- Examine all the couch pillows and you'll find a zipper there that keeps the cushion stuffing in.
- The stuffing will be either sheets that are made of foam or it will be pillows that have cotton in them.
- Unzip the couch cushion covers and get the stuffing out.
- Now measure the cushion covers for width and height so that you can determine the amount of stuffing you need to buy.
- If the width and height comes to 20 inches by 22 inches, then for the stuffing material you'll need to subtract 2 inches from the measurement. Which will make it 18 inches by 20 inches. This figure need not be an exact measurement though.
- If the couch cushions are made of foam mattresses, then you'll need to buy the material depending on the amount of cushions that the couch has. There are varied choices that one can make in the quality of the foam mattress. Look through the choices and choose one to suit your needs.
- If the couch cushions have cotton batting in them then you'll have to buy this separately. How much batting you buy will depend on the condition of the couch. If it's in very bad shape then you'll need to replace the whole batting. But if it's not, then you can simply add to the batting.
- Once you have the foam mattress, cut the sheets to the size of the couch cushion. Depending on the height that you want, you can cut as many sheets as you want.
- Stuff these into the cushion and spread evenly. (If there is trouble getting them to stay in a single line, glue them first and then stuff). Then zip the cushion.
- With the batting, if there is no zip, then cut the cushion and stuff it with the cotton batting with the amount that you desire. Then sew or glue it back.
If you don't feel confident about this, then you can practice on a discarded couch cushion, if you have one. Rest assured, restuffing the couch cushions is not a difficult task and one can easily handle it without any professional help. Hope this article has helped clear some doubts. Back to that coveted seat then.
