Requirements

  • Safety glasses
  • 20-minute mud or any fast drying plaster or Plaster of Paris
  • Mud trowel
  • Mud pan
  • Seam tape
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Sandpaper
  • Putty Knife
Procedure
The process of repairing a drywall crack in ceiling is relatively easy if done patiently. It is also necessary to follow the steps systematically.
  1. First, take off all the debris and paint that is hanging around the cracked portion.
  2. Next, check if the crack is elongating of not. If the crack is elongating, you may also remove the weak debris by force.
  3. Next, use sandpaper to smooth out the cracked portion.
  4. Using the mud pan, finely mix the plaster mixture in it. It is advisable to make the plaster a little bit thick, as thick plaster clings to the cracked surface very well.
  5. Use your putty knife to apply the plaster in the first layer, in and around the crack.
  6. Next, cut out the smallest possible strip of seam tape and cover up the crack, and then apply another coat of plaster over the seam tape.
  7. Let the plaster dry for a few days and then check the strength of the plaster. It should hold on to the crack, so long it has dried well. You might also even it out with the help of sandpaper. Then apply a coat of paint and wait for it to properly dry out, before giving it a second coat of paint.
If the crack is very big, you can also saw off an entire section of the drywall and replace it with the help of the same method and an appropriate sized section of drywall. Repairing drywall cracks in ceiling that are very big can be a difficult task, and you will need power tools in order to cut out the damaged portion.
