Renters Insurance Checklist for College Students Living off Campus

A handy checklist for college students to prepare for discussing renters insurance with insurance agents.
Registered for classes? Check. Picked out a futon for your dorm, apartment, or house? Check. Scoped out campus so you know where your classes are at? Check. Purchased renters insurance? Didn’t think so. Unfortunately, many college students make the mistake of passing on renters insurance knowing full well the consequences if a fire or act of theft results in losing an expensive laptop, MP3 player, or other valuable.

We all know that most college students are strapped for cash so it might be good news to hear that renters insurance can be purchased at relatively low cost—as low as $10 a month--by comparing renters insurance quotes online from multiple carriers.

If you’re taking the time and spending the money on a renters insurance policy then you might as well get a sufficient one. Here is a handy checklist you will want to employ when discussing the details of your policy with your insurance agent.

• Contents coverage - This should be a given for all renters policies. The building is covered by the landlord but your personal possessions are not unless you have this listed in your policy.
• Liability coverage - Protection against fees resulting from a law suit and medical expenses from somebody getting injured or suffering property damage at your residence.
• External living expenses - If your residence is seriously damaged and you cannot live in it until it is repaired then you should have coverage for the cost that comes with finding a temporary residence.
• Replacement coverage - Whether it is damage resulting from theft, plumbing, fire, vandalism, severe weather, or electrical, your belongings should have replacement coverage.

College Living with a Renters Insurance Policy

College is stressful enough with exams, papers, and pursuing the opposite sex that it is just silly to add the well-being of your belongings to that list when it is so easily avoidable and at a relatively low cost with a renters insurance policy. Go online to compare quotes today and make sure your policy covers all your bases because you don’t want to be left in the dark without a renters insurance policy.
