Remember When
What could be greater than for it to be summer and to be a child
Summer seemed like sweet reprieve
School was over and the fields
Were all in clover.
Strawberries were a treat
And watermelons cold delight.
We’d play all day
And in the sun we’d stay.
Now as years
Have rolled by
Like clouds in the sky
I remember with a smile
When we were nine or ten
And summer was just fine.
In mid-life summer
Still makes me happy
But the days are not so carefree
And happiness is no longer
Store-bought ice-cream and toys
Or other childhood joys.
There are now sort of care-worn smiles
From days gone by
But oh!
Do you remember when.....?
We were ten.
