Reflections of Love

I wrote this poem when I was becoming a young woman. It is an eye-opening revelation of something that was there all along--my mother's love.
In a shattered piece of broken glass
I watched a child grow
I felt her joy. I knew her pain
Like none could ever know

She was just a little girl
Her cheeks all rosy red
At night her mom would read to her
And tuck her into bed

At six-years-old she started school
She didn't want to go
But Mommy knelt and held her tight
Oh how her baby's grown

Mommy made her dresses
And she'd dance across the floor
She'd twirl and laugh--she felt such love
Please Mommy make one more

Her early years were lonely ones
Her friends were very few
She rarely shared the pain she felt
But somehow Mother knew

At 16 years her heart was crushed
Her mother offered care
Although she chose the solitude
She knew her mom was there

After graduation
Changes took her far away
But home is always where Mom is
No matter where you stay

The reflection now is dimming
I need no longer see
My mother's love I've recognized
That little girl is me

Thank you Mom for loving me
For always being there
For trusting and believing
For showing so much care

You told me about Jesus
My pain you'd always feel
In your tender words and gentle touch
Those stories became real

And when I become a mommy
I pray my children see
The same reflection I have see
May His love also shine through me
But home is
