Recently it was reported by a British tabloid that Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal were engaged and planning a wedding. The article cited a source that reportedly said, "Jake popped the question during a romantic trip to Rome last October, but Reese has only just accepted the Brokeback Mountain star’s proposal." Witherspoon’s rep reportedly slammed the rumors saying, "It’s absolutely false. There’s not one ounce of truth to it." Another source claims that Gyllenhaal was recently spotted at Cartier with his sister, Maggie, looking for a ring for Witherspoon. He reportedly ended up buying a "Love" necklace with two rings intertwined.

Witherspoon, 31, and Gyllenhaal, 26, began dating early last year, five months after her split from ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. The two reportedly fell for one another on the set of their movie Rendition. They were first spotted together last March and spent the next several months getting close. In June, Witherspoon reportedly called it quits on the relationship fearing that it was much to soon after her split from Phillippe. By August Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal were reportedly back on and going strong. In October, Witherspoon said of Gyllenhaal, "He’s great!"

Witherspoon and Phillippe announced their separation on October 30, 2006 amid rumors of infidelity on his part. The couple were married for seven years and had two children – Ava, 7, and Deacon, 3. They met at Witherspoon’s 21st birthday party and co-starred in 1999’s Cruel Intentions. Their divorce was finalized in October 2007. It was rumored that Phillippe had an affair with his Stop Loss co-star Abbie Cornish. Both Phillippe and Cornish denied the affair, but recently it has been rumored that they are dating.
