Reasons to Consider Fake Diamonds
A list of reasons to consider purchasing fake diamonds instead of real diamonds when it comes to jewelry.
Some people are instantly turned off by the term "fake diamond." Many of them think "no way! That's not for me!! I only want a real diamond!" Or they think only a real diamond "is forever."
Much of that opinion, however, comes from being influenced by advertising. For the open-minded consumer, there are many good reasons to consider getting a fake diamond instead of a real diamond. Some of these reasons include:
Cost - The most obvious reason is that fake diamonds are significantly cheaper than real diamonds. A high quality cubic zirconia can be purchased for under $100 whereas a similarly sized high quality diamond would be around $10,000. Moissanite, another type of gem used in place of diamond, might be between $1,000 and $2,000 for the same characteristics.
Clarity - Cubic zirconia can be produced without inclusions (a term called "flawless" in the diamond world). This means that light passing through the gem will not be altered by imperfections in the stone and will sparkle much better. A diamond with a rating of "flawless", on the other hand, will be drastically more expensive than a normal diamond.
Color - Cubic zirconia are colorless. With diamonds, only the best, rarest, and most expensive diamonds are colorless (a color rating of "D" on the diamond scale). If you are even able to find a diamond with color of D, it will be extremely expensive compared to a normal diamond.
Some People May Choose to Not Support the Diamond Industry - Ripe with claims of artificial price inflation and slave labor, some people do not wish to support the industry.
People Cannot Tell It's Fake - There are ways to tell if a diamond is fake or not, but most of them require looking at the gem under magnification, or doing some tests with the loose stone (meaning not mounted on a ring). To the common observer, a fake diamond or a real diamond on a ring is indistinguishable, even if they examine it up close. The only way anyone will every know it is fake is if they are told so.
In the end, it's always a personal decision whether to get a fake diamond or a real diamond. But as they are virtually indistinguishable to the naked eye, more and more people are choosing to go with a fake diamond mainly for financial reasons, especially during this time of economic recession.
