Reach Your Potential, Steps To Achieve What You Want
You know what? You may not be reaching your potential at this point in your life. Yes it is kind of scary to think that we all have untapped potential that we have yet to discover. But how do we discover out potential?
Before we discover our potential let’s look at why we might not be reaching it.
As a child you were allowed to experiment, to try different things. When you began to walk and you fell over you never said, "Oh walking is not for me I give up" – you tried again. In fact you did not know about the concept of "giving up", now as you are older things are different. We tend to "try" something and then simply give up if it does not work out.
To reach your potential you must begin to move out of your comfort zone, however you must also be realistic. What is it that you would love to do? Is it run a marathon, sing on stage, be in a movie? Now ask yourself what has stopped you doing this thus far. This is where you will find the excuses that you make. Some will be valid. For example at this present time I am not fit enough to run a marathon, but if I put my mind to it and began to train I could do it in maybe 2 years time.
List out all the "excuses" and put a mark beside the realistic reasons why you might not be able to do what you want to do. Re look at everything you have written down. How many really are excuses that you are making?
Now write out a list of things you though you could not do and you did and succeeded doing them. What have you overcome which you thought you could not overcome?
This list will help you prove that you can do anything you put your mind to.
Here’s an example from my life – recently I was in London, and went on the London Eye, one of the largest moving observation wheels in the world. Now I don’t really like heights, but it did not bother me. I felt the fear but did it anyways. Also I used to dislike flying. When I looked out the window and saw that the plane was turning (you know the way you’re feeling as if you’re going in one direction but the whole plane is actually tilting outside!) but know that does not bother me.
What does this prove? That I had an irrational fear about something but I over came it. Now if I can do this with these fears I can surely begin to use this knowledge to reach my potential, to know that I can fear something but that does not mean I can’t do it.
Now that you have a list of excuses and achievements, think back on the achievements and really think about how they made you feel. Wasn’t achieving what you achieved just the best feeling, didn’t it make you feel really good about yourself that you did what you wanted to do?
Imagine feeling like that every day as you begin to reach your potential.
Ok you’re ready to begin to make a list of things you want to reach and achieve. Start of with something easy and work your way up. The more times you achieve something the more positive reinforcement you will get which will make it easier to do the next thing and the next thing until before you know it you’ll be reaching your potential and beyond.
