Rhythm and Blues marked its genesis in the 1940s as a popular African-American music genre which was based on heavy insistent beats. The 1950s and 1970s witnessed the incorporation of 'electric blues', 'gospel', 'soul' and 'funk' to this genre and the R&B songs that we have been listening to 1980s onwards is the newest avatar of this genre, known as Contemporary R&B. R&B songs have always garnered lots of attention and fan following, owing to their hypnotic play of rhythmic percussion coupled with meaningful, often street smart, lyrics. Hail Akon!
