Randy Moss Contends He's the Best Receiver Ever

Randy Moss is nothing compared to what he used to be, but the contentious 49ers wide receiver claims he's the best to ever play the position.
Talk about hubris. Randy Moss is certainly a good wide receiver, and it's fair to say he's one of the best ever. But to take a leap from that position and say that he is THE best ever is a bit of stretch. Yet that's exactly what Moss himself said at the San Francisco 49ers' media day event for this year's Super Bowl.

Jerry Rice, who also played wide receiver for the 49ers, is often considered the best receiver ever to play the game and in 2010 was actually named the best football player in history by a player poll. Asked about the comments, Rice himself had some choice words, though he never specifically claimed that he was the best ever.

Hearing of Rice's response to his initial comments, Moss spoke yet again, noting, "Everybody is going to have their opinion. I do not live on numbers. I really do not. If you sit here and just said, 'Who is the greatest running back?" Statistically it is Emmitt Smith. People would say Barry Sanders, Gale Sayers or Jim Brown. Their numbers do not match Emmitt Smith, but people would say Emmitt Smith is the best running back?"

Realizing that an uproar had emerged over his comments, he seemed unfazed, noting, "You make your own judgment. You really do. I know what I think. I am not going to sit up here and tell you how to look at it and how to judge it. I think when it comes to going out there, making plays and helping the team do the things that they are able to do to win the game—I think I am the greatest receiver ever, point blank. Next question."
