Raj Effect May Haunt Congress: The Times of India

Raj Thackeray's anti-north Indian tirade may just reverberate in the assembly elections in Delhi. With yet another death in Maharashtra, allegedly as a fallout of the campaign against people from Bihar and UP, Delhi BJP is planning to harness the backlash. It will point out that Maharashtra's Congress government has failed to protect Poorvanchalis in Mumbai because it is "hand in glove'' with Thackeray and try to draw a parallel with Delhi. Dikshit's statement sometime back about migrants from UP and Bihar exerting pressure on the city's infrastructure will come in handy, say party leaders. 30-Oct-2008

Raj is fighting for rights of Marathi peoples (Maharashtrians). India is having various states and each state is having its own language. Though Hindi is national language of India people from few states speak this language. Especially South Indian states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala don’t entertain Hindi at all. Either they will speak in native language or in English. Keep this in mind for future reference.

For last so many years, peoples from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar coming to Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, which is capital of Maharashtra and financial capital of nation, cyber city Pune and in Nashik, which is having industry on large basis. These migrants are called as Bhayya. They do work 10-12 hours and that is also on low salary. These Bhayyas work in industry as well as in construction line.

For last so many years, railway minister comes from Bihar. While recruiting posts for railway jobs in Maharashtra, the Bihari minister always gives preference to Bihari youth. They are having permission to give examination in their native language i.e. Hindi, but Maharastrians are not allowed to give exam in Marathi. If we consider 1000 jobs, then only 4 or 5 Marathi peoples appointed in Railway. This is only one example. Everywhere same thing is happening.

For simplicity, consider NRIs as Bhayye who are working worldwide on low salary as compared to standards set by various nations. Now you will get the answer that why NRIs are demanding ban on MNS, the registered political party of Raj. No need to say a single more word.

Who is Raj?

Raj is nephew of Balasaheb Thackeray. To understand the phenomenon of Raj Thackeray and the present predicament of Mumbai and its reaction in distant Bihar, one has to combine a psychological and sociological perspective. In the case of Raj - and equally of his uncle Balsaheb.

Raj Thackeray, as we know, decided to reinvent himself once it became clear that he was not going to be Balasaheb Thackeray’s political heir. For the latter, the son’s blood triumphed over that of the nephew, ushering in the unlikely leader Uddhav as Balasaheb’s successor. One isn’t quite sure what made the senior Thackeray change his mind after years of having projected Raj as his political heir.

To teach Uddhav a lesson, Raj decided to take him on - on his own turf - by launching the MNS. The MNS would not only challenge the Shiv Sena, but also other parties and lay its own claim to representing Marathi Mumbaikars, if not all of Maharashtra. While rarely coming into open conflict, the two factions have been waging an underground war for supremacy.

As promised, while launching of MNS, Raj is now keen for rights of Marathi Manoos. As per Raj, definition of Marathi is very clear. Who speaks Marathi, has respect towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and who adopts Marathi culture. Raj doesn’t have objection for Bihari but in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, they are entering in power and saying that Mumbai is of UP/Bihar. This disturbs Raj.

In South Indian states, even you will survive for a week or two without speaking Telugu or Tamil. But, in Mumbai, anyone can live for years without saying a word in Marathi. Raj wants to change this.

MNS means Maharashtra Navnirman Sena - Reformation of Maharashtra. Without keeping eye on any elections, Raj is fighting alone. All political parties, especially from North India, are demanding strong action against him right now. Various cases launched against him. Raj has put his life on stake for Marathi Manoos. Raj has already declared that he is not interested in any political fruitful post.

Youth from all over Maharashtra are already accepted him as their leader and have reacted strongly when Raj got arrested. Leaders from UP/Bihar though demanding strong action against Raj; in Maharashtra, Marathi Manoos is fully supporting Raj. They know now, Raj is fighting for him.

Fear Factor for Other Parties

You call it MNS, party formed by Raj, but Political Observer knew that in upcoming elections Raj Sarkar is going to come in power. This is fear factor for all political parties. If ruling parties do take strong action against Raj, he will gain more popularity. If not, then the traditional vote bank of Bhayye will go far away from them. Parties seating on Opposition bench are also in same scenario. If they support Raj, they are supporting thoughts of Raj. If they do not, then they are against Marathi; that’s the clear message that will go to masses.

Right now, Raj is facing problems. Government has banned him to even talk with media persons. But, in future, he is going to rule Maharashtra without any doubt.

Other states are always keen to secure rights of natives, then where Raj is wrong?
Because MNS is threat to all political parties.
Unable to take firm stand on Marathi issue.
Raj is just doing political stunt.
No doubt; he is going to rule Maharashtra.
