Raising The Fuel Standard
Was written as a speach to be presented about the causes of our raising gas prices and the reason why cars are so fuel effiecent. This article is to raise awarness more than to give solutions.
Do you ever run your car till its shaking cause it has no gas? Have you ever paid at the pump with all coins? Do you constantly ask much does gas cost now? Well since the end of the November midterm election gas prices have been on the rise in America creating unrest among the teenagers in this country. This is due to the oil companies having a monopoly on our energy product market. The failure of the electric car. Mainly the problem is that we as a country do not impose a strong fuel standard on the car companies. We need to do something before we are paying 7 of our hard earned dollars on gas per gallon to only get us 20-30 miles a gallon. RAISING THE FUEL STANDARD IS THE ANWSER.
The oil companies have so much power in this country due to the fact that we have no alternative fuels under fast production. We have this program that was supposed to be the future called "the hydrogen fuel system" but were told 10 years ago its 10-15 years off and are being told the same thing now there seems to be a problem with their math if you ask me. The reason is because oil companies aren’t ready for us to find a new fuel because that would destroy their business. There are still 1 trillion barrels of oil in the ground which means that the oil companies who are raising and raising the barrel price which is currently around 62 dollars a barrel, have over 62 trillion dollars to make off the world still before they want us to find a cleaner and more effective fuel. We can fight this by raising the fuel standard to combat the rising price of gas so that it doesn’t cost us as much to drive our cars.
Our addiction to oil was almost cured in 1996 when California pushed the producing of the electric car. In 1996 GM produced the ev1 which could accelerate to 60 in 3.2 seconds and could go up to 100 miles on one charge. While although it sounds great on paper the car was not marketed to the public and the people who found out about the car and went to buy one were told that they were only allowed to lease it. This showed GMs intentions from the get go. They never planned on having the car on the market long and soon enough stopped producing it because they claimed there was no market for the car when in truth it was because GM didn’t make as much off the car as they did with other cars for one reason. They didn’t have to fix the cars as much by replacing parts in them because of the oil and fuel wear on the part. which is where the car companies make a large portion of their profits. There were a group of people called the ev1 committee that came with a list of over 8,000 people who wanted to buy an ev1 to maybe force GM to make some but GM said after calling the people and telling them about the downside of the car that only 50 people were still committed to buying the car. Once again showing GMs total neglect for the more effective car. See everything in this country boils down to how much money you can make in the fastest way possible. GM now has some of the lowest fuel standards of any cars on the road. American cars average MPG is around 24 on average now where as Japanese automakers MPG is around 50. GM and Ford have experienced a decline in sales since the advancement of the Japanese fuel rating.
We are poisoning the world we live in and the children growing up with asthma are having a much harder time. I had asthma when I was younger and it got pretty bad some times in LA it is much worse than it is here the air is so thick there it feels like you are breathing in muck. If we don’t step up and demand better fuel standards from the car companies then we are doomed to pollute the environment even more causing more global warming and a thicker atmosphere. If we don’t act now the children of this nation will not be able to grow up in a clean world. There is no reason that the children of the country should suffer for America’s addiction to oil and lack of action for better fuel standards.
According to Al Gore a renowned expert on global warming we could reduce our pollution by at least 12% by just driving more fuel efficient cars. Well I know it doesn’t sound like much but it means a ton in terms the health of our children. We must act The fuel standards in this country are sad as they have ever been which has had other countries naming American cars "Yank Tanks". This is because the government has poorly enforced fuel standard requirements. There are many loopholes in the system in where the car companies can get around the fuel standard to make cars which get 10 miles to a gallon such as the Hummer. American cars are not getting better in comparison to other countries cars we are getting worse. GM and Ford can’t even sell their cars in other countries because they don’t meet the fuel standards of countries like Japan. Hybrid cars are a new trend in the car making business which are a great advancement in the automotive business as well as a much more effective form of transportation because they don’t add as much pollution to the atmosphere. Hybrid cars also save us a ton of money in the long run because they get up to 70 miles to a gallon at the moment we need to enforce the fuel standard more though so that all cars that are produced have a fuel standard close to this because as I said this is an extreme it is not the common car which gets about a third of what this one gets.
WE MUST ACT NOW. RAISE THE FUEL STANDARD. Through a simple thing such as building more effective cars we can save the lives of youths suffering from asthema because of all the pollution that our cars are putting into our atmosphere. We can help stop global warming which is a major threat to our everyday life. We can combat the oil and car companies who want us to have to pay more for less effective cars so that they can both make more money. All this by doing something that all other countries have already done just making our car companies produce more effective cars and making it so cars that don’t get at least a certain amount per gallon can no longer be sold in the US.
