Rain - The Dog
Lucy found a dog on her porch in the Rain.
I pushed a lock of my blonde hair behind my ears and plucked the dog hair that had settled on my shirt. "Hey," my boyfriend of two years walked in the room and kissed my cheek. "Hey Nick," I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down for a kiss. "Mm. You know I love your kisses but we have to get home," he murmured against my skin. He tried to pull away but I held him tighter to me. With a heavy sigh I pulled back and let him go. He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward his car. I got in with ease and heard the engine roar to life. He turned the radio on and started flipping through the channels.
I looked out the window and watched the gray clouds lazily roll their way across the sky. "It's going to rain. I can feel it," Nick said and wrinkled his nose. By the time we got home heavy drops of rain were splattering against the car. He killed the engine and grabbed my hand. His thumb ran circles around my fingers causing a delicious shiver to run down my back. "Let's get inside before it gets heavier," I pulled him in for a kiss and smiled. I opened the door and sprinted toward the porch. Something whimpered and I froze in place. Nick was still sitting in the car looking at the sky so I knew it wasn't him. I searched the porch and found a dog huddled in the corner. "Hey Doggy," I cooed at him and his tail wagged. "C'mere," I got down on my knees and he came running into my arms.
His shaggy hair was soaking wet, but his eyes smiled at me. Nick finally made it to the porch and he looked down at the dog. "Poor thing," he muttered under his breath and ran a hand over the dog's back. "We can't just leave him here," I said standing up. Nick's eyebrows shot up as if asking me 'why not?'. I grabbed the key from under the mat and unlocked the door. I hurried inside and grabbed two towels and rushed back outside. I dried the dog off and let him in the house. The minute he was inside he laid his big head on the carpet and started to snooze. "Look! He's the perfect dog!" I shouted to Nick and he came in laughing. I searched for a collar on the dog but found none. "Let's put up flyer's for a missing dog and if his owner doesn't get him within a week can we keep him?" I asked and gave Nick my best pouty face. "Fine," he huffed after a minute of looking at me. I let the dog sleep there for the night and the next day I made flyer's for a missing dog . I put them all around the neighborhood, secretly hoping that his owner didn't come. A week went by slowly, and no one showed up for a missing dog.
I didn't even get a call! Finally that night I was going to tell Nick he was now our dog. "Hey babe!" I greeted Nick as he walked in the door carrying dog food. He kissed me in a greeting and patted the dogs head. "Guess What?" I asked jumping a little. "What?" he grinned at me. "No one showed up for the dog. So, now he is ours!" i jumped in excitement and hugged Nick tightly. "Well, what is his name?" he asked me when I pulled away. "How about Rain?" I asked. Nick laughed and put the dog food on the ground beside him. He kneeled next to the dog and laughed. "Hey Rain! Like your new home?" he asked and rubbed the dog's belly.
