Ragnarock: Part 1

The fate of the world and all of humanity rests on the frail shoulders of a sixteen year old boy. I fear for us all.
The rain splattered across the window facing the New York highway as sixteen year old Michael Rame sat on the dusty floor of the abandoned apartment complex sulking. The old building, untouched for over ten years, is a sanctuary for Michael. After the twin towers collapsed practically next to the apartment, nobody dared to go near it. That’s what made it a good hiding spot.
Michael leaned against the cold, beaten drywall looking out, through a shattered window across from him, onto the usually busy streets of New York. Snow continued to cascade down and the bark of dogs rang throughout the city. Michael muttered quietly to himself as his head made small spasm like motions constantly.
Just hours ago, as Michael was biking home after his shift at the local pizza parlor when a gentle shower of snow descended from the sky. Michael stopped pedaling and looked up at the sky to see snowflakes fluttering down. "Snow in April? No way is that happening in New York!"

Michael sneezed as the surrounding air got colder and the snow piled on his shoulders. He started to push his bike home, not wanting to ride it and risk slipping in the snow which was building up along the sidewalk. Then from behind him came a faint growl followed by an unusually loud bark. Michael whipped his head around expecting to see a large domestic dog, who had lost its owner, follow him but to his surprise it wasn’t. Instead, crouched just behind Michael’s bike was a wolf, bearing its fangs and ready to strike.
Fear shot throughout Michael’s body and adrenaline was taking over. It was urging Michael’s body to move but it wouldn’t. Michael stood there, frozen with fear, with his head looking over his shoulder. The wolf pounced at Michael’s head, opening its jaw so wide it could have easily engulfed it. In a split second the spell on Michael was lifted. In one swift motion he threw his bike at the wolf, making contact right as the wolf was about to bite down. The impact winded the wolf and its saliva enveloped Michael.
Michael made a break for it when the true terror of the situation set in. The wolves were everywhere; dozens of them laced the streets leaving only carnage and a trail of blood behind them. Michael’s primal instincts just took over at that point. He started running, not knowing where he was going. He just had to get away from it all and find somewhere safe before he ended up as a pile of bones.

After more than ten minutes of running Michael finally slowed down and looked at his surroundings. He was in the Old New York, the term the citizens gave to the area that was near the twin towers when they fell and were abandoned because of that. As he looked around it was still abandoned, even by the wolves. Michael knew that even if he stayed here he’ll eventually be found. He needed a place to hide.
He ran towards a towering business building, one of the few that stayed standing and was needlessly abandoned. The glass front door and several windows on every floor remained shattered and debris was scattered everywhere. Michael pressed the elevator button a few times but knew it was futile. After running all out for the past ten minutes he could have used a break. But he couldn’t afford it so without a minute of hesitation he found the stairs and started limping his way up.
